Retail Patriarch Penner Dies Week After Son's Death
Sam Penner, patriarch of San Antonio's oldest family owned men's clothier, died Saturday. He was 92.
Sam Penner, a Polish immigrant who entered the United States through Ellis Island, owned Penner's Men's Clothing Store with his two sons. Penner became a successful businessman despite never being schooled in finance or business administration.
Penner believed that to remain in business and make a profit, he had to serve a niche market. He did so by offering shoes made by Stacy Adams, guayabera shirts, and big and tall men's suits. He also established a profit-sharing program for his employees.
His death follows that of one of his two sons, Michael "Mickey" Penner, who died June 14 of an apparent heart attack.
Penner is survived by Mark Penner, daughter Beryl Greenberg of Austin; his grandchildren, Millie and Mike Sprintz, Joel and Michelle Greenberg, Matthew Penner, Melanie Penner, Mitchell Penner and Max Penner; and three great-grandchildren, Zachary and Greggory Sprintz and Joshua Greenberg.
A graveside service was held Sunday at the Agudas Achim Memorial Gardens.
