Hamas Vows to Revenge Israeli Killings of Palestinian Militants

GAZA, Jun 24, 2002 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) has vowed to take revenge on Israel for its killings six Palestinian militants in the southern Gaza Strip on Monday.

Hamas also blasted the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) for putting Hamas founder and spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin under house arrest.

Israel occupied Palestinian towns, assassinated Palestinians and besieged Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's compound (in the West Bank town of Ramallah), while the PNA arrested Hamas members and its police besieged Yassin, said a Hamas leaflet delivered in Gaza.

Yassin told reporters from his house that he rejects the action by PNA security and police forces of putting him under house arrest in Gaza City.

Yassin also accused the United States of turning the battle from between Israel and the Palestinians into feuds among the Palestinians themselves, adding that Hamas rejects any internal fight among the Palestinians.

Monday's killing of Hamas' armed wing leaders in Rafah in southern Gaza by Israeli Apache helicopters missiles coincided with the imposing of the house arrest of Yassin, said the leaflet.

The leaflet called upon the PNA to lift as immediately as possible the house arrest imposed on Yassin, adding that lifting the house arrest would keep the Palestinian unity.

Witnesses said that Palestinian police opened fire as Hamas supporters marched towards Yassin's house after police had announced that Yassin was under house arrest.

However, PNA police said that the Hamas protesters fired first.

One man was treated in hospital for a stomach wound which he said was caused by Palestinian police gunfire.

"There was gunfire from the Hamas supporters. We are investigating the circumstances of the reported injury," a Palestinian police official said.

The problem is that the PA, along with it's even more wacko extremist groups like Hamas, really has nothing left to say. I'm envisioning the following exchange in Hamas Central last week:

Hamas Chief: The evil Israelis have finally done it. They killed Palestinians.

Hamas Flunky: What're we going to do about it, boss?

Hamas Chief: We will really show them now. We will send hundreds of teenagers to blow themselves up in Israeli shopping malls, weddings, and so on. Boy are they going to be sorry they ever messed with us now.

Hamas Flunky: Uh, boss . . .

Hamas Chief: And then, if that doesn't force them into the sea, we will ... get this . . . send some teenagers with explosives strapped to their chests to blow themselves up in the middle of Israeli buses, shopping malls, and weddings.

Hamas Flunky: Uh, boss . . .

Hamas Chief: And then, I will unleash my masterstroke. If the Israelis don't all run screaming into the sea - sometimes I amaze myself with my creativity and brilliance - we will strap explosives onto teenagers and have them go martyr themselves in Israeli shoping malls, weddings, busses, crowded intersections, and other places where lots of Israelis congregate. That will really show them. We'll teach them to kill Palestinians who have done nothing other than support the extinction of their tiny little state.

'Yassin told reporters from his house that he rejects the action by PNA security and police forces of putting him under house arrest in Gaza City.'

This sounds more like "protective custody" than "house arrest". As soon as the Israelis leave the area he will be freed to continue his normal activities.

drop a 500-2000 lb. bomb on his house and remove him as well as any supporters hanging around outside. Make him a martyr too.

It sure makes their threats to avenge the "mass-murders", the "slaughtered children", and the "war crimes" seem less credible. With these people, it doesn't matter if you hit a military target or not... their terrorist targets and their cries for "vengeance" just never change.

Hamas rejects any internal fight among the Palestinians.

Do they now? Golly, how interesting. They'll have to make a list of their rejections so we can study it.

The law of unintended consquences in operation. First, the Israelis supported the creation and expansion of Hamas as a "counterweight" to the PLO. Now, Hamas wages war on Israeli citizens. Is there a lesson to be learned here for the U.S. about the perils of entanglements in that screwed up region known as the Middle East?

Yes. We should help Israel exterminate all terrorists.

"exterminate terrorists" eh? Now...there's a hopelessly utopian dream. Do you also intend to "help" Israel create a new version of Hamas? You draw some very strange lessons from the ugly lessons of history....but I guess when you first fail, fail, fail again eh?

That's "exterminate all terrorists" (your utopian words). Do you also tend to help it "abolish all poverty" and bring in the millenium?

I disagree. But, I have no doubt that had you lived in the US during WW2, you would have had the same thoughts about the mighty Third Reich. Evil must be exterminated or it will exterminate good.

Do you also intend to "help" Israel create a new version of Hamas?

Well, this makes a lot of sense.

You draw some very strange lessons from the ugly lessons of history....but I guess when you first fail, fail, fail again eh?

Not at all. In fact, it is you who are drawing the wrong lessons from history. It is you and your kind who have constantly failed in your goals. But you keep on trying none the less.

Well, I hadn't given it much thought, but.....

Doesn't make a lot of sense? You must not be aware that Israel helped to support the creation and expansion of Hamas as a counterweight to the PLO. This is not a controversial point.

Your use of the Third Reich analogy does not hold water. I asserted that your stated goal of eliminating "all" terrorists is hopelessly pie in the sky. The World War II example actually proves this. The Nazis were "exterminated" in Germany but "all" (your word) was not. Remember Stalin and Mao (the two greatest mass murders of the 20th century)?

I have heard this charge but have found no evidence to support it.

Your use of the Third Reich analogy does not hold water.

What a shock that you would feel that way!!!

I asserted that your stated goal of eliminating "all" terrorists is hopelessly pie in the sky.

Why? Give me a chance.

The World War II example actually proves this. The Nazis were "exterminated" in Germany but "all" (your word) was not.

That's because I wasn't the one doing it. It can be done IF those who are committed to wiping terrorism out are serious about doing so.

Remember Stalin and Mao (the two greatest mass murders of the 20th century)?

What about them? They weren't Nazis or Arab terrorists.

The words you used were "exterminate all [note the *all*]terrorists." You did not specify only Arab or Muslim (or for that matter Nazi) terrorists. I, however, took you literally to mean "exterminate all terrorists" from tribal thugs in Liberia and the Zimbawee to Columbian drug lords. Perhaps you meant this metaphorically. If so, you should have been more specific since you are obviously endorsing a policy which will put much American treasure and troops at risk.

Whether you want "a chance" or not, the goal of exterminating *all* these folks is hopelessly utopian and a waste of resources. These resources IMHO should be devoted to defending the U.S. rather than attempting to bring in a Second (terrorist-free) Coming paradise in every knook and cranny in the planet.

Let's review that, shall we, so we can determine just how you interpret statements. What I said above was:

"We should help Israel exterminate all terrorists."

Now, since Israel is primarily (if not solely) concerned with Arab/Muslim terrorists, is it reasonable for you to assume that I meant other terrorists? I don't think so, but given your desperation to "prove" your point, I can understand your "leap of faith".

Perhaps, but I think that your extending yourself once again. Helping Israel does not necessarily mean putting American lives or $ at risk. We could simply allow Israel to do what has to be done. Of course, given your pov, it is conceivable that you could extend anything Israel does to somehow affecting American lives and $. Perhaps the only "safe" thing Israel could do to really protect American lives and $ is to allow the Arabs to exterminate them. Then, maybe you could get gas $.10 a gallon cheaper.

Whether you want "a chance" or not, the goal of exterminating *all* these folks is hopelessly utopian and a waste of resources.

On the contrary. Once one terrorist sees our resolve against others, he or she may change their ways. There was a time when Americans could travel overseas without fear because those who wished them hard were terrified of an American response. We could and should inspire that fear in terrorists and potential terrorists again.

These resources IMHO should be devoted to defending the U.S. rather than attempting to bring in a Second (terrorist-free) Coming paradise in every knook and cranny in the planet.

You are entitled to your opinion as I am to mine. Are we done?
