GAZA, June 24 (Reuters) - Clashes erupted between Palestinian police and Hamas supporters on Monday after the Palestinian Authority placed Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, the Islamic militant group's founder, under house arrest in Gaza City. Witnesses said Palestinian police opened fire as the Hamas supporters marched towards Yassin's house after police announced Yassin was under house arrest. Police said the Hamas protesters had opened fire. One man was treated in hospital for a stomach wound which he said was inflicted by Palestinian police gunfire. "There was gunfire from the Hamas supporters. We are investigating the circumstances of the reported injury," a police official said. Yassin is paralysed and partly blind and deaf. His house was guarded by dozens of armed supporters. About 50 Palestinian police were deployed more than 150 metres (yards) away from the house, whose door remained open as people filed in and out. The announcement of Yassin's house arrest followed Israeli and international pressure on Palestinian President Yasser Arafat to crack down on militants waging an almost 21-month-old uprising against Israeli occupation.24 JUN 2002 08:38:23 Hamas supporters, Palestinian police clash in Gaza

So what has been stopping them for the last ---say 6 years?
Except the guys doing the bombings aren't interested in borders. There are only interested in the elimination of Jews.
Threats don't become you.
The PA police = the tanzim.
But then I suspect you know this very well. From the inside, so to speak ;).
One of many mistakes the Israelis have made is their efforts to destroy the only Palestian group, the cops, that could do something to stop the terrorists. While lotsa people feel that the IDF is going to stop the bombers, in the end, it will be the Palestian adults, through the police force, that can end it.In the West Bank right now, anything that weakens Arafat strenghtens Hamas, and vice versa. Arafat at least says the right things (and usually acts like he means them), while Hamas is unapologetically committed to destroying Israel. If Israel is interested in peace, the proper approach for the Israelis would be targetting Hamas. If, on the other hand, their real interest is in justifying a takeover of the West Bank, then hitting Arafat makes sense.
Since the PA is easier to find and attack, its tough to say if the IDF is just being lazy or if they have a hidden agenda.

But why do they have to be nice to the Pallie cops in the interim?. IMO, they should put up their Wall and administer the West Bank themselves, simultaneously. After that, they could negotiate a "pullout". Sound fair?
