"These people are maligning an entire family, who have temporarily--maybe for quite a long time--lost a daughter to a
horrible crime, and bandying about the must outrageous, scurrilous charges anyone could dream up."
Absolutly, but I think it's motivated more by a 'Jerry Springer Show' mentality than by malice towards our faith.
"It just turns my gut, and I have to speak out. I'm sick of it."
Belive me, I feel the same way, but how we speak out is important. I'm glad the family isn't seeing any of this, and even if they are (I bet they are a little to busy however) they have the love and support of a wonderfull community to counter it. Fools mock, but they shall mourn.

Utah Homo's are not LDS and not all people of Utah are LDS! No, some homos are LDS. The Church is adamantly against the practice, but there is a significant and highly vocal number of them at odds with LDS teachings in this regard.
Are you suggesting that the perverts, deviates, and criminal element in SLC come from entirely outside the Church?
I hope not. Mormon baptism actually does not inoculate a person from a propensity to evil. Refresh your knowledge of LDS teachings on "free agency."

I can't remember if Zion's Bank is owned by the LDS church or not. And the Gibbons guy is scum, even if he was found not guilty for corrupting a minor. And even if the church does own the bank, they do not condone his vile behavior. Not sure of the particulars of his situation, but I'd bet money he is no longer a member of the church, and hasn't been for years. The Church divested it's holding in the bank that was founded by Brigham Young in the 60s, however, it is by tradition, the "Church Bank."
The suggestion that I might feel that the LDS Church would condone behavior by guys like Gibbons is ludicrous. I mentioned the goings on in SLC to enlighten Illbay (Why am I confident about that? Because it is the nature of that community there. It's like America 60 yeras ago: Everyone KNOWS everyone else, knows them well, and knows them in the context of shared spiritual values.) on the true nature of SLC: That it has it's share of vice and evil just like other metropolitan areas and that unfortunately not all folks, including Mormons, practice what they preach.

As I was driving into work this morning, I was listening to KSL radio. The host had Dave Francom on the line, who is Lois Smart's brother. The host asked Francom what the listeners could do to help the Smart family. Dave Francom said that the expressions of faith, support, and prayer have meant a lot to the Smart family. And he also said for everyone who is going out this summer to cabins, rivers, etc to keep an eye out for Elizabeth and other children who are missing. The family still has hope and faith that Elizabeth is alive and will be returned to them.
To: jo6pac
I'm sorry, I didn't mean to infer that you thought the LDS church condoned what Gibbons did.
To: Utah Girl
You must have been here for Gay Pride week. Did you get to see the parade? Ugh. Nope and had I known about it, I'd have gone out of my way to miss it.
Salt Lake City is a good city, there are areas that are very nice, and pretty safe, others areas are not.
Just like any other city.
I'm not ruling out family hankypanky either, but I do need a better source than the National Enquirer.
Me, too.
I do have friends in SLC, what they've told me is that the Smarts are highly regarded in the community.
What do you mean by that? What is Edward Smart's kudos aside from a million dollar home?
The fact that the guy hired a dirtbag like Ricci and allowed him to work around his children for months and that he most likely paid him under the table (illegally and against the tenets of his church avoiding taxes and insurance) doesn't put him in much high regard with me.

That's interesting about this creep Gibbons. It proves there are Mormon high-rollers who engege in the same vices as other parts of the population. I wonder if any of the Smarts had a business relationship with Gibbons? People in real estate and construction usually have lengthy dealings with banks, and this being the Church's bank, there may be a connection.
To: Illbay
Correction! The police searched the Smarts' computers and found nothing ILLEGAL. You left out the word ILLEGAL. Homosexual pornography depicting adults is not ILLEGAL. Therefore, we can assume that the NE article may possibly be correct in stating that there was homo-porn on Tom and Ed's computers.
To: Illbay
BTW, I am as abstemious as the most saintly Mormon with regard to alcoholic beverages.
Can you not come up with REAL ARGUMENTS? Must you always resort to ad hominem attacks??
To: Palladin
They found nothing of concern. This contradicts the NE article which claims the police are hot on the trail of this "big lead."
NE is lying. Wait, it'll be shown eventually.

Ed Smart didn't know that Ricci was a felon. That does sound naive, but it does happen. My sister is the office manager for a home contractor here, they just started doing background checks on their people in January. We are too trusting for the most part here in Utah. As far as Ed SMart giving Ricci the car in exchange for work done on the home, so what? It was probably beneficial to both parties to do so.
As far as Gibbons goes, there were rumors swirling around him for a long time. There are no such rumors about the Smarts, except what the NE has published. Ed Smart has done quite well with his businesses (real estate company, he also renovates/builds homes, and sells them.) And, believe you me, if he has used the LDS church to cover up his alleged icky activities, he will be under great condemnation, not only by the community, but by God...

No I am not suggesting that for the sick need a physician.
I have had your acquaints in the past and you like to taunt those who are LDS now if we offended you I can understand, but if seems in general you find us a good sport!
To: Utah Girl
To me, people who're trying to make some sort of tie-in between Ricci and Ed Smart (as in "complicity") are ignoring the simple fact that, with this being an "inside job," it would stand to reason that the perp might be someone who intimately knew both the layout of the home and the family members.
Again, do I know this is true? Do I know Ricci did it?
No, I do not. And in that ignorance I am no worse off than anyone else here.

I pray we can understand there are those out there who find the LDS good Sport and pray that we can keep ourselves in check and not get caught in their snares.
There are many here who are entitled to opinions and it hard to read, but they are coming from their world experiences and not ours and so I know I must make allowances for that, and not take it personally. Illbay we love you and know that you too can find more charity for these folks who have not tasted the joy that we have, and pray for their understanding to be less critical.
Jo6pac,Palladin,Plummz they enjoy using LDS for sport! I pray some how you can find another outlet and fine peace!
To: TheBigB
If you will admit that "distortions of the facts" are based on your own opinions of what the facts are and not necessarily anyone else's, fine. Are you really that obtuse? The "facts" to which I have referred repeatedly, that you seem to want to ignore, are facts as stated by the police chief in publicly broadcast press briefings, and not my personal opinions.
You can continue to distort the facts in this case and I will continue you to point out those distortions to the FR audience.
To: Jolly Green
And I will then continue to make you look ridiculous by pointing out that your challenges boil down basically to "I've been here for FOUR YEARS!"
You don't bother me, I won't bother you. But you look worse every time you try. And I'll say again, you have no responses whatsoever to what I've said to your so-called "challenges". But again, you don't bother me, I won't bother you.
