Earthquake shakes Taiwan (5.1 on the Richter scale)

TAIPEI: An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale shook Taiwan on Monday, the central weather bureau said. There were no reports on damage or casulties.

The tremor hit at 09:12 am local time from an epicenter 8.3 km southwest of the eastern coastal city of Hualien, 17.1 kilometers below the earth, the bureau's seismologists said.

A quake measuring 6.8 on March 31 killed five people at the construction site of Taipei's World Financial Center. Construction of the building -- which may become on the world's tallest -- has suspended for two-and-a-half months for safety checks.

On May 15, a three-month-old boy in eastern Taiwan died after a television set fell on him when a tremor - an aftershock of the March 31 one - hit the island with a magnitute of 6.2.

A quake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale devastated central Taiwan on September 21, 1999, leaving 2,400 people dead and some 100,000 homeless.

I have a good friend who is curently a misionary over in Tiawan right now. She sounds like they have earthquakes quite often. I don't know if they are usualy this big. I'll have to find out how it was for her.

Pretty much always is. 5.0 is pretty trivial for them.

Actually the best plan for the PRC, rather than a hopeless amphibious invasion, is just to wait till they can WALK to Taiwan; will take quite a few million years (not certain how long, on a geologic scale, not that long) but Taiwan is heading to hit China at a fairly rapid speed. :-)

5.1 really isn't all that much........for an earthquake on the Richter Scale (sp?), it's a ten fold increase to the next whole number; ie an eight magnitude earthquake is ten times stronger than a 'seven' magnitude.
