GAZA (Reuters) - The Palestinian Authority placed the founder and spiritual mentor of the Islamic militant group Hamas, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, under house arrest in Gaza City on Monday, a Palestinian security official said.
The move came amid redoubled Israeli and international pressure on Palestinian President Yasser Arafat to crack down on militants after two suicide bombings in Jerusalem and a gun attack on a Jewish settlement left 31 Israelis dead last week.
"It was decided, starting from tonight, to impose house arrest on Sheikh Ahmed Yassin to safeguard the ultimate national interests of the Palestinian people," the official told Reuters. "The decision was issued from high up, from President Yasser Arafat."
Abdel-Hamid Yassin, son of the wheelchair-bound cleric, said the family had not been notified in advance of the decision and that Palestinian Authority security service units had taken up two positions within 200 meters (yards) of their home.

House arrest? The guy probably hasn't been out of the house in years. They need to cut him off from contact with the outside world completely. Take away his phone and cell phone and let nobody in. Groceries can be left at the door after they've been fully inspected by an Israeli team.

He's under house arrest--being fed fine wine and a steak dinner. He'll be out tomorrow morning.

They should put him under arrest and then hang him by his checkered diaper!

They shouldn't arrest him. Just shoot him first.

If he's under house arrest, then the Israeli Defense Forces should special deliver a couple of 2,000 lb. bombs to him.

Because he's a "spiritual mentor"? House arrest is a nice sounding term. And those PA guys are going to be protecting and watching out for him as much as guarding him.

This guy should be killed. Period

Isn't he blind and in a wheelchair? He's pretty confined already. How will he be able to tell the difference?

How will he tell the difference? Delivery vs. take out. That's about it.

If it was any more "crushing and decisive" they'd say it was a war crime.
Isn't the leader of Hamas a cripple? Putting him under house arrest doesn't mean squat. He couldn't get around much anyway.
