WASHINGTON -- House Speaker Dennis Hastert gave no indication Sunday whether Congress would provide the $200 million bailout Amtrak contends it needs to operate beyond midweek and said some railroad routes should shut down.
He said Amtrak's management must correct what he called money-losing policies before turning to Congress whenever the railroad runs out of cash. Amtrak's new president said he completely agreed.
"I want to change the way we do business," David Gunn said in an interview. "My goal is to turn (Amtrak) into a much more focused organization with tight fiscal controls."

When a concerned voter here in Texas wrote to him complaining that Amtrak was going to kill the "Golden Eagle" route, he wrote a letter defending his environmental record and said the golden eagles should be spared due to their status on the endangered species list.
If Gunn doesn't know, he shouldn't be in the job.
But of course he knows, he just doesn't have the
cajones to go up against the Congressmen in
the states that need killin'. This could be a blessing
in disguise for Gunn. Let the system shut down,
blame in on Congress, let them make the cuts
while funding the bailout.
Amtrak should get bent.
