One of the reporterettes in Show Low even said that prayers must be working because she can't understand why the fire hasn't hit Show Low yet. (She almost sounded disappointed...)

I'm sure she was. Local reporters live for carnage and suffering. It's the only thing that saves them from the monotony of covering the latest school board meeting or accident on the Interstate, gives them tapes they can submit for the local Emmy awards, and gives their agents tapes to use to plug the reporter to stations in bigger markets.

How long before the terrorists realize that all they have to do is drive around the West and toss cigarette butts out the car window? Someone could bring us to our knees very easily.

I wouldn't want to be an Arab living west of the Mississippi the first time an Islamist terrorist gets caught doing that.

And note, for example, what the pure luck of being in Lower Manhattan on 9/11 did for Ashleigh Banfield's career. And note how the New York Times swept the Pulitzers this year for 9/11 coverage, and how many local NYC TV stations got all the major TV news awards for 9/11 coverage. The suffering of the little people equals a major stepping stone to success for these people. They literally climb over dead bodies to move up in the industry.

The Hayman fire in Colorado has/had 3 type I teams so it has to be serious. We are at 137K acres but it looks contained.

Woodland Park, Colorado (where I live) will be on standby until the first heavy snows.

the Forest Service has done a PATHETIC job of managing this forest. We have dwarf mistletoe, pine beetles, drought and yet they refuse to allow burning and thinning.

I heard that they wouldn't accept our dozers from the Cripple Creek - Victor gold mine becuase "they would hurt the environment". Bullshit. These dozers are as big as they get but they aren't 24 MILES WIDE which is the Hayman fire.

A quick busy signal means that the telephone trunks to that areas are full. If the house had burned for example you would either get normal ringing or a standard busy signal.

Basically the fast busy signal means there are too many calls going into and out of the area. More than the telephone system can handle.

The Japanese made some sort of assault on the forests in the Pac NW in WW2.  Oregon, I think.  Also in Sydney, AU this year they caught people riding through the bush (forest) setting fires.  There Eucalyptus (blue gum) is more flammable than Pine trees and is similar to standing gasoline.
