New Mexico -- The candidate is Hispanic. His name is John Sanchez, and when he won a three-way GOP primary for governor earlier this month, he became only the second Hispanic in modern times to head a Republican ticket (the first was Florida's Bob Martinez in 1986).
"People accuse me of being a token, the great brown hope of the Republican Party," laughed Sanchez, 39, a roofing contractor and freshman legislator who became an overnight GOP star in 2000 when he ousted the state's longtime Democratic House speaker in his home district. "But I didn't run as a Hispanic. I ran as an American, a good New Mexican who happened to be a good Republican who -- oh by the way, I happen to be Hispanic."
