Not that I'm making any allegations or anything, but keep in mind that the police are under no obligation whatsoever to tell the truth to the media about any of this. If, hypothetically, calls were indeed made to others before one was made to the cops, and the cops had a reason to believe it was in the best interest of their investigation to make some unknown suspect think the first call was to the police, then that's what they would say.
Most of the cops in the Susan Smith case thought her story was funny almost immediately, but they played the game as if they believed her for several days, while they were piecing together evidence against her.
