IDF set to expel bombers' families

By Aluf Benn, Amos Harel and Gideon Alon

The political-security cabinet decided on Friday that Israel Defense Forces troops will enter Palestinian cities in the West Bank and operate in them for "as long as it is required." The decision also authorized Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to order a future operation in the Gaza Strip.

The cabinet decided in principle in favor both of the expulsion of families of suicide strikers from the West Bank to the Gaza Strip, and of the expulsion of terror operatives from the territories. The implementation of this expulsion policy depends upon the outcome of a legal review.

Another decision authorized the conscription of a reserve brigade slated for activity in the territories under emergency tzav 8 orders. One reserve infantry brigade is to be called up today under these emergency conscription orders.

The language of the decision reached Friday represented a compromise between a proposal advocated by Sharon calling for IDF presence in the territories for a "prolonged period," and the position upheld by Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Defense Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer, that called for the IDF action to continue so long as operational considerations warrant it. Sharon eventually embraced formulations promoted by the senior Labor Party ministers.

Top security officials, led by Shin Bet security service head Avi Dichter, said at Friday's meeting that there is no substitute for IDF presence in centers of terror, and that encircling Palestinian cities does not suffice.

The prime minister spoke about "changing the rules of the game" in the confrontation with the Palestinians. Sharon stressed that the IDF will operate in the territories without any time constraint.

Security sources said yesterday that the IDF operation on the West Bank is likely to last several weeks. IDF troops now occupy parts of Jenin, Nablus, Bitunya (near Ramallah) and Bethlehem; IDF forces also are moving in and out of Tul Karm and Qalqilyah.

At Friday's meeting, Minister Yitzhak Levy (National Religious Party) did not vote in favor of the IDF operation. He objected that his party's demand for a more forceful decision calling for the "vanquishing" of terror was not accepted.

After originally voting in favor of the operation, Peres then asked to change his vote when he saw that Levy had abstained; Peres, too, asked to abstain. Ben-Eliezer interjected: "He [Peres] is in favor, he's already voted in favor."

Sources close to Peres subsequently explained that the foreign minister opposed the government decision. All the other ministers supported it.

Ben-Eliezer told the ministers that the IDF will operate intensively anywhere it needs to, on the basis of intelligence information. He said: "We must act in response to a changing reality ... No action right now will [completely] stop the terror attacks; we face escalation, and the terror organizations are accelerating their activity. We'll deploy our forces within terror focal points; that's where we'll operate."

The ministers did not discuss the expulsion of PA Chairman Yasser Arafat. Security officials explained that the expulsion of suicide bombers' families entails legal problems, while expelling terror operatives themselves is less complicated legally.

Minister David Levy said that Israel is "changing the rules of the game." He explained: "There need not be any limitation on the length of the IDF's presence in [Palestinian] cities. We've already entered them, and we pulled out due to international pressure; and then the terror resumed. We've seen that encircling cities is not enough."

Responding to the government's new expulsion policy, a senior security official told Ha'aretz yesterday the "time has come for us to take off our gloves when dealing with suicide strikers." This source claimed that should terror strikes continue, Arafat could also be deported. "He's the snake's head, and you can't leave him; it [Arafat's expulsion] is a question of finding the right time," the source said.

Justice Minister Meir Sheetrit told Ha'aretz last night that that the decision to deploy IDF troops in West Bank cities for "as long as is needed" does not violate international law, since Israel has the right to defend its citizens, and prevent terror attacks on its city streets.

Finally some sane moves by the Israelis.

This is the tip. The decision also authorized Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to order a future operation in the Gaza Strip. Watch for it!

Israel releases arrested Fatah leader
06/22/2002 Agence France-Presse
RAMALLAH, West Bank, June 22 (AFP) - Israeli troops abducted a senior member of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement on Saturday, but released him shortly afterwards, Palestinian sources close to Fatah told AFP.

I mean how can a senior Fatah leader be anything other than a person you attack on sight?

The expulsion policy cuts right to the psychology of the suicide bomber: "I might die but my family will be taken care of."

However the Israelis will not impelemnent it.

This is great! The families of these murdering scum will soon find out that the adulations and 25,000 Grand that they got following the "praise allah" deaths of their sons and daughters will not go far in other areas of the world. And, oh, will they ever miss all of those health and education benefits given to the offspring and kin of the "illustrious martyrs!"

On the other hand, probably Saudi Arabia or some other Arab country will have to host them and foot an even bigger bill than the one they are footing now for these cretins. If so, I hope that the family includes not only the immediate members, but the 1st through 5th degrees of relations. If Israel is lucky, these evil, obnoxious fools will wear out their welcome in exile like they did in Syria and Jordan. Those "Palestinians" whined a little too much and were massacred by their Muslim brothers and sisters. It was the only way to shut them up...

Expulsion hell! They should be killed outright. People who send their kids out to commit random mass-murder shouldn't be allowed to live, and the same goes for terrorist operatives, too.

I also like the land for peace initiative. For every terror act, take away a piece of land. The Pali's may have unlimited number of homicide bombers, but their land is limited. Let them know this in advance. Also.....find and kill every member of Fatah, Al Aqsa, etc....

Sounds good, other than more should be deported than just the bombers family, ten known terrorists should be deported for each Israeli victim. I sure pray it works for them.

This land for peace initiative seems to make a mockery out of Israel to me. It seems to portray that life is worth nothing more than land. That Arabs can kill Jews at only a cost of some desert (btw - Palistinians are really just Arabs. They aren't a separate group of people. Their motives are the same as all other Arabs - they want to get rid of Israel). While these actions are a good move, in my opinion (I have always been in favor of actions that are directed at the families of homicide bombers - it gives them something to think about blowing themselves up), I seriously doubt that it will go into effect.

However, I think it would be unfair to say that the Israelis are totally at fault for their situation. They have always had their hands tied in one way or another. Nowadays, their fate lies totally with the whims of the U.S., and from recent reports, it appears as though Bush isn't as right-wing as he had seemed in the past. I don't think that he sees the situation the U.S. as similar to what is happening in Israel (i.e. After WTC bombing, he leveled Afghanistan, however, he is tying Israel's hands when dealing with terrorism). Until the world realizes that this problem in the Middle East isn't really about Israel's control of lands won during a war in which it was attacked, but rather a war of Islam vs. all other religions, I seriously doubt any real progress will be made in such situations.

You are right that this isn't about land. However, you should realize that this is the Pali mantra, regardless of how untrue this is. Every war, including 1967 was started by the Arabs. There was no peace before 67 and returning the land to pre-67 borders is ludicrous. As for President Bush, I don't feel he fully appreciates that Islam is not a peaceful religion and we are going to have to confront it as have the Jews.

People who send their children out to commit murder, as have some of the Palestinians, are murderers themselves and as such, should bear the same punishment as do murderers. If their children know that their parents will be punished, perhaps said children will rethink their decisions to murder others while committing suicide.

I think Israel should publish a list of cities it will sieze in the event of homicide bombers. The cities shouldn't be numbered or selected in order of listing, but the list should be published. The next bombing, a city from the list should be siezed. Next bombing, sieze another one. The list should continue to be published with big red slashes marked across the cities they have lost due to their support of insane bombers.

IMHO, I think Israel should kill every member of a homocide bomber's family, including the family goat and camel. Then, level the entire village/town from whence this scumbag came. (A little old Soviet Union style for you !!) Then cover the corpses with pig fat and bury with the rest of the pig. (A little Pershing thrown in for good measure)

Good idea. I've been saying for a long time that Israel must go after the loony families who breed these suicide murderers.

There must be some penalty for the parents of these monsters. The parents should be responsible for the actions of their offspring. After all, they are accepting the $25,000 blood money, right?

Something odd here. This whole thread has too much logic, reason and truth in it.
