After three years of fiery debates, rolling electrical blackouts and shifting political positions, Calpine Corp. is beginning construction of a controversial 600-megawatt power plant in San Jose's Coyote Valley.

So far, the 14-acre site on the west side of Monterey Highway just north of the community of Coyote has been cleared of derelict vehicles, dilapidated sheds and other junk and scraped bare of vegetation. The real work has yet to begin.

Assemblyman Roderick Wright, D-Los Angeles, who spoke at the ceremony, likened neighborhood opposition to being in church. ``Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die,'' Wright said. ``But in 10 or 15 years, people will say, `What was all the fuss about?' ''

``If Metcalf had been in existence'' a year ago when rolling blackouts bedeviled California, ``we would not have had blackouts,'' project director Ken Abreu said.

And,we would not have had G. Davis running around like a maniac, making really bad deals for makeup power and blaming the brokers.

You will notice that the modern power plants are very efficient in terms of pollution. This means that the secret to a cleaner environment is more, newer, power plant construction.

And the secret to making favorable deals for power is to encourage power plant construction. You want an oversupply.

On KRON 4 TV this morning, They showed a clip of one hefty NIMBY activist saying "that after the recent disclosures of what supposedly happened last summer energy-wise, that this plant wasn't needed."

I'd like to find that fat body and slap a couple of DUMP DAVI$ stickers on her wide load rear end.
