Terrorism acccusations raise hackles at PETA
The Virginian Pilot ^ | June 22, 2002 | By BILL BURKE

NORFOLK -- PETA doesn't let political correctness get in the way of a good ad campaign, be it a menacing Ronald McDonald wielding a bloody butcher knife or ``Got Beer?'' billboards mocking the milk industry. But now the attack dogs are PETA's critics, and they're portraying the world's largest animal-rights group as an agent of domestic terrorism.

The mention of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals in the same sentence as al-Qaida, by critics and on Capitol Hill, has the fur flying at the organization's waterfront headquarters here. There is even a push to revoke PETA's tax-exempt status because of a contribution it made to an organization accused of committing terrorist acts.

``The whole notion that PETA supports terrorism is false and defamatory,'' said Jeffrey S. Kerr, PETA's general counsel and director of corporate affairs. ``When you use the word `terror,' look at the terror inflicted on billions of animals in this country every year. That's real terror.''

Kerr calls the attacks ``desperation tactics'' by adversaries who know they are losing a years-long PR war. ``They're trying to smear us any way they can,'' he said.

Kerr is doing the talking for PETA these days rather than the organization's president and founder, Ingrid Newkirk, who rarely is at a loss for words or shrinks from controversy.

Kerr is fielding queries because PETA is ``seriously considering litigation'' against its attackers, though he declined to name the organizations or individuals PETA might sue.

``When you use the word `terror,' look at the terror inflicted on billions of animals in this country every year. That's real terror.''

What an idiot, what more can be said after that statement?

According to PETA, all humans are terrorists for eating the tasty variety of the four legged kind. Apparently, it takes George Orwell's satire in Animal Farm quite seriously. PETA thinks nature experiences a 911 every day at human hands.

``When you use the word `terror,' look at the terror inflicted on billions of animals in this country every year. That's real terror.'' There is truth in this statement that in no way minimizes human terror.

The whole purpose of that statement was to minimize the human terror of Sept.11

But now the attack dogs are PETA's critics, and they're portraying the world's largest animal-rights group as an agent of domestic terrorism.

Ingrid Newkirk, the President of PETA, said that it would be a good thing if hoof-and-mouth disease swept through America -- that it would be preferable for a virulent disease to kill millions of cattle than for Americans to eat them, and that it would be "good for animals, good for human health, and good for the environment."

That is known as "Sanctioning and inciting bioterrorism".

PETA is a terrorist group.

They aren't a terrorist group, bub.

They are expressing their Rights as American Citizens.

We need to leave them alone, or at least be sure if they ever plan an attack that they are let out on bail! ;)

Janet Reno just had a bad hair day!
