I'm puzzled. Why is it okay to do flagrant character assassination of the Smart family behind their backs, but you can't point out to the people doing it that they're behaving like pigs, TO THEIR FACES?

I can understand 'defending' unfair characterizations.

however that goal is not accomplished by bringing personal attacks and creating an even more hostile environment. The only thing that is heard is the "attack" and not the 'intent'.

if your intent is to 'defend' against what you deem character assassination, why would you advocate character assissnation yourself?

Well, to be fair, the Smarts could log onto FR and read the comments for themselves....it IS a public forum. So it's not exactly 'behind their backs.' I don't know enough about the case to make any judgments about the family one way or another, but I do wonder why you are so personally offended by perfect strangers' criticism (however unjustified) of them. Is it just that they're mormon and so are you?
