I can understand 'defending' unfair characterizations.

however that goal is not accomplished by bringing personal attacks and creating an even more hostile environment. The only thing that is heard is the "attack" and not the 'intent'.

if your intent is to 'defend' against what you deem character assassination, why would you advocate character assissnation yourself?

I surreptitiously read it this morning, and there really wasn't much beyond what EnquiringMind told us Wednesday night. The rest is a semi-accurate recap of the whole 16 day saga. I'll be stuck on a train most of this evening, so I expect somebody else will have to do the honors of typing the text into an FR post. And I don't turn on a computer on the weekends except for really urgent business, so I'm about to disappear 'til Sunday night or Monday morning. I'm sure my fellow FR detectives will get along splendidly without me.

The trouble is that your post uses WV to refer to "West Valley City" a very large suburb of Salt Lake, just west and south of the city...

but that causes terrible confusion now because Edmunds has been found in aNOTHER W.V., West Virginia.

An earlier post (on this thread I think) quoted a hospital staffer saying that a particular prescription drug he'd been taking caused the liver failure (it named the drug but I can't remember).

I still say this thread is headed for confusion if WV is used to mean both the city of West Valley, in Utah, and also the state of West Virginia.

Heroine addicts get hepatitis C from sharing/dirty needles. Heroine addicts who are on a heavy-use stretch that would lead to an over-dose, are generally impotent. At least that is what the heroine addicts at the rehab center, I visited, shared. Heroine addicts are usually thieves as they need lots of money to support their habit.

I'm puzzled. Why is it okay to do flagrant character assassination of the Smart family behind their backs, but you can't point out to the people doing it that they're behaving like pigs, TO THEIR FACES?

Well, to be fair, the Smarts could log onto FR and read the comments for themselves....it IS a public forum. So it's not exactly 'behind their backs.' I don't know enough about the case to make any judgments about the family one way or another, but I do wonder why you are so personally offended by perfect strangers' criticism (however unjustified) of them. Is it just that they're mormon and so are you?

Doesn't anyone find it strange that he drove himself to the hospital, walked into the ER while he was overdosed with heroine and now he is in critical care? (did someone drive him there in Edmunds own car and then left the scene?)

As long as police are saying in their press conferences that nothing found on the computers has any relevance to the abduction, the mainstream media's editors won't let them print the titillating stuff. As far as I know, the journal has not been mentioned by police in their press conferences, and since it's reported contents are directly related to the "not relevant" contents of the computers, I think it's off limits to mainstream media as well. The instant a mainstream media outlet identifies anything they can credibly claim as a connection between the abduction and the titillating side stories, they'll print the latter.

Thanks MozartLover. I have heard of this missing little girl. This is such a sick sad world when innocent children are taken from their homes or just walking along the street. I would urge all states to get the Rachael alert system. Here is just a bit of information about the Rachael alert system:

The Rachael Alert is part of the nation-wide "Amber plan", named for Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old who was abducted and murdered in Texas in 1996.

Utah is the ninth state to establish such a program, along with a number of cities and counties.

The Rachael alert system is why there was such a rapid response to Elizabeth's kidnapping. I don't know what the reason is (totally) for such widespread coverage of Elizabeth's abduction, but I hope in the future, missing children get a better break.
