Ashcroft's Credentials: Are They Suspect?

By Dana Milbank

Is John D. Ashcroft becoming a liberal?

Conservative organizations are furious that the attorney general allowed his deputy, Larry Thompson, to address a gathering of gay Justice Department employees Wednesday night. Two, the Concerned Women for America and the Culture and Family Institute, fired off a statement yesterday saying Ashcroft, until now a darling of the religious right, has betrayed them.

"After all the work we did to stand up to the liberal mudslinging during Ashcroft's confirmation fight, this is what we get?" asked Robert Knight of the family institute. "I have to ask: Why is Mr. Ashcroft, a committed Christian, using his official capacity to celebrate sin?"

Concerned Women's Sandy Rios condemned the "celebration of homosexuality" in the Justice Department's Great Hall. The event, held by "DOJ Pride," was attended by about 150 people, many of them career department lawyers. "If the Bush administration cannot uphold the most basic of family values and virtues, it risks losing pivotal support from those who have been most loyal in the past," Rios said.

The Log Cabin Republicans, a gay organization, said Ashcroft and Thompson sent the right message. "Thompson's speech was actually quite good," said spokesman Kevin Ivers, who attended. He said Thompson sent the gay employees the message that "the government is proud of their service" in the war on terrorism.

Justice Department spokeswoman Susan Dryden said the Concerned Women should not worry. The meeting was one of many employee sessions designed to promote "working together" among department officials. "It was a pretty uneventful event," she said.

Now, tell us how the Bush administration is "conservative"? I keep asking that question and getting no answers that I can remember more than 30 seconds. Has John Ashcroft had some kind of secular-humanist "conversion"?

Here's exactly what I dislike about these people. Why is it that Ashcroft can't be proud about the service of his entire department? Why does he have to specify "the queers done good" to make them happy?

Cant you read or do you just find it convenient to avoid the facts. This meeting where an Ashcroft aid made a presentation to DOJ officials thanking them for their efforts was "one of many employee sessions designed to promote "working together" among department officials. 'It was a pretty uneventful event,""

He didnt say they were doing more or better work than other DOJ employees. He merely talked to them about the War on Terrorism and thanked them for their efforts. Whats your beef? If I remember correctly this is a free country and Ashcroft or his staff are allowed to associate with whom they please.

Bring on Hillary. Lets get this over in one swoop. You see what you so-called conservatives did by bringing on this duplicate of Bubba? Don't you get it? If you think that I or my wife or friends of mine will ever cast a vote for GW you are sadly mistaken. Why? Because we are true conservatives. When we need a Patton we get Mr. Rogers. Rise up Bubba. Run Nader, I'll vote for you over these frauds.

Sort of like the "valuable" work the Navajo Code Talkers did during the second world war. The handful of Navajos stayed behind the front lines and spoke to each other in Navajo to confuse the Germans. Not once were they in the line of enemy fire.

Now the ones left get a gold medal and a statue in Washington honoring the practically worthless jabbering they did.

I guess I have had too many martinis at lunch. At least they weren't anus worshipping or carpet munching homosexuals that are out to destroy this nation!

...one of the many employee sessions designed to promote "working together".........

Now just what the hell is that supposed to mean? You may wish to, but I have no desire to work with a bunch of people who think the anus is a god! These people need to be transported out of normal heterosexual society to a place where they and their ilk are the only ones there.

Then they could bugger their brains out and who would care and furthermore our children would be safe from their insidious, satanist designs on their young bodies. There would be plenty of priests there to help them enjoy their new religion to the fullest.

My beef, sir, is that these people demand to be, and are addressed as a separate group - separate from men, from women and even from race.

The noise we hear is to treat everybody equally, but then out of the other side of their mouth they want to be treated separately - and specially.

My point - the one that you missed - is the Department of Justice comprises men and women. That should be the end of the distinction, and only for the purpose of what restroom they use.

Race and sex are obvious differences between people.
Everything else is in their heads.

As long as we are setting aside special celebratory days for what people do in the bedroom, how about a special day for people who snore?
