The Republicans beat the Democrats 9-2 in Thursday night's annual Congressional baseball game. Some of the Republicans in the stands heckled the Democrats for not having any women on this year's team.
Earlier Story: (CNSNews.com) - For the first time in years, there will be no women playing for the Democrats and three women playing for the Republicans in Thursday night's 41st annual congressional baseball game. Democrats have fielded women on their team since the game went co-ed in 1993.
Playing for the GOP are Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida, Heather Wilson of New Mexico and first-term lawmaker Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia.
Ros-Lehtinen didn't get a hit in last year's game but still has the distinction of being the first Republican woman to get on base. She will play in the infield.
Wilson, a former collegiate rower, is listed as a "utility" player. Capito will play in the infield as well.
The Republican National Committee had no comment. The National Organization for Women said "oh" but declined further comment.
Rep. Martin Sabo (D-Minn.), the Democrats' manager, said he is always open to "prospects" and women have played on the team before, but he would not comment any further.
Proceeds from the game which netted $90,000 last year, will be donated to the Washington Literacy Council and the Washington Metropolitan Boys and Girls Clubs.
The game became a charity fundraiser in 1946 when the Washington Star newspaper turned it into an annual event. Before 1946, it had been played on an irregular basis.
Games ended in 1958, when too many legislators were getting injured.
In 1962, the founder of "Roll Call," a Capitol Hill publication, Sid Yudain revived the game.
The GOP holds a 26-14 edge over their Democratic colleagues.
LOL
Nevertheless, I imagine little Tommy Daschle walked every time at bat. As "vertically challenged" as he is, Roger Clemens couldn't have hit the strike zone!
One factor gives the Republicans an advantage in the game. No way is a Democrat batter gonna hit either up the middle or to right field. It's the left field foul line everytime! I could go on, but I can hear those rim shots from here!
Barney is more into Flag Football in his early days he was a tight end, Frank now is a wide receiver.
