Reading the Qur an in bed

Q. When I mentioned in an Islamic gathering that I read some passages of the Qur’an in bed before going to sleep, I was advised against such a practice. I was told that it was better to be seated when reading the Qur’an. Someone suggested that the Qur’an must not be read while facing any direction other than that of the Qiblah. I was also advised against placing the Qur’an on my prayer mat. This was considered to be mishandling the holy book by putting it on the floor. It must be kept in a book case, on a table, or something similar to these, but never on the floor. Please comment.

Ibrahim Toure

A. Reading the Qur’an is one of the most important aspects of remembering God, which we are all required to do at all times. God says in the Qur’an: “Remember God standing, sitting and lying down.” (4: 103) This includes reading the Qur’an. Moreover, the Prophet used to read the Qur’an when lying in bed. He has taught us that when we want to go to sleep and we are in bed we hold our hands in cupped form over our mouths, read the last three surahs and then go with our hands over as much of our bodies as we can reach, and to repeat this three times. Furthermore, it is recommended to say Subhan Allah, Alhamd Lillah, Allah Akbar, 33 times before going to sleep. There are several other prayers which we say just before sleeping. All this goes to show that there is nothing wrong with reading the Qur’an when lying down, whether we intend to sleep or not. Nor is there anything wrong to be facing any direction when reading the Qur’an. You may read it facing north or south, east or west, or any direction in between. The information the reader received is incorrect.

What is clear is that the people who gave such information had the best intention, but such good intention is not good enough unless based on the right information. In this case, it is not. Respect of the Qur’an is required without doubt, but this respect begins, first of all, with one’s own attitude. Thus, it is not right to put the Qur’an on the floor, because what is left on the floor is generally considered to be unworthy. However, if one has to do it briefly, because a situation requires it, then it is hoped that there is nothing wrong with that. It is always important to show maximum respect to the Qur’an.

1) Does, "Oh G-d..." count?

2) Does Bill praying Hillary doesn't walk in count?

Tonight's passage from the Holy Qaran:
And as he continued in this case lo! a postern of the palace, which was carefully kept private, swung open, and out of it is came twenty slave girls surrounding his brother’s wife, who was wondrous fair, a model of beauty and comeliness and symmetry and perfect loveliness, and who paced with the grace of a gazelle which panteth for the cooling stream. Thereupon Shah Zaman drew back from the window, but he kept the bevy in sight, espying them from a place whence he could not be espied. They walked under the very lattice and advanced a little way into the garden till they came to a jetting fountain a-middlemost a great basin of water. Then they stripped off their clothes, and behold, ten of them were women, concubines of the King, and the other ten were white slaves. Then they all paired off, each with each. But the Queen, who was left alone, presently cried out in a loud voice, “Here to me, O my lord Saeed!”
Because of technical difficulties, tonight's passage was from the Thousand Nights and a Night, not the Holy Qaran. We apologize for the inconvenience.

"...we hold our hands in cupped form over our mouths..."

It's just a shame that they don't include a plastic bag between their hands and their mouths before they do this.

For me, reading the Koran for the first time many years ago was an experience much like reading a comic book for illiterates.
That impression has never changed in any subsequent reading.

"then go with our hands over as much of our bodies as we can reach, and to repeat this three times."

To make certain the bombs are strapped on as we murder innocent men, women and children. What an evil and vile "religion". Until and unless the "good" muslims totally condemn these morons, they are suspect, IMO.
