Police were called 11 times in months before shooting

By Yolanda Jones yojones@gomemphis.com June 21, 2002 Police had been called 11 times in the past year and a half to the home at 3448 Rosamond before a 3-year-old girl was shot to death last week at the residence following a drug dispute.

The calls to 3448 Rosamond involved a variety of complaints, from domestic disputes to suspicious people in or near the house. Police said most of the calls were 911 calls made by neighbors complaining about shots fired or suspicious people selling drugs in or near the cinder block house near Macon and National.

Occupants of the home have also called police on several occasions about several domestic disputes or fights.

No reports were taken to give further details about the individual incidents.

The only details dispatchers have about the calls are the time, the nature of the complaint and the address.

The only two incident reports related to calls to the Rosamond address were the result of calls after the shooting last week in which toddler Jessica Borner was killed and eight other people were injured.

The house is rented to Helen Hobbs, 59, Jessica's grandmother, who was also wounded.

In 2001, police were called to the house only twice, once in February and again in December.

Hobbs was living in the house at the beginning of that year but was evicted in April 2001 as a result of being charged with possession of drugs with intent to sell. Hobbs, who pleaded guilty to the charge just last month, was later allowed to move back in.

Here is a look at the 911 calls made by occupants at the house or neighbors in 2001 and 2002 before the shooting.

Feb. 27, 2001: Suspicious person call at 4:21 a.m.

Dec. 23, 2001: Domestic dispute call at 7:36 p.m.

Jan. 1: Disturbance call at 3:41 a.m.

Jan. 14: Burglary and shots-fired call at 2:30 a.m.

Feb. 1: Domestic disturbance call at 9:35 p.m.

Feb. 21: Fight call at 3:02 p.m.

March 13: Suspicious person call at 7:29 p.m.

April 14: Domestic dispute call at 5:04 p.m.

May 5: Domestic dispute call at 12:32 p.m.

May 12: Domestic dispute call at 11:19 p.m.

June 10: Domestic dispute call at 5:52 p.m. - Yolanda Jones: 529-2380

Seems Big Mama Hobbs was running a drug house...while on WELFARE for the past 30 years or more..our tax dollars at work.

It is tragic that a 3 year old had to loose her life for these peoples illegal immoral life syles.

With the amount of criminal activity in this home you would have thought that parents in the neighborhood would NEVER have allowed their children ANYWHERE NEAR THIS HOME!

Gail, do we actually know that?

Seems to me that quite often the only people trying to inject sanity into a situation like this are mothers and grandmothers, while their teenage-scum sons/grandsons hang out with druggies, do burglaries, and generally make life hell for the whole family.

As for people on welfare... well, I grew up on it. Don't paint all poor people as lazy or as drug-users or criminals. Most poor people are a lot more generous to others than are the rich.

Related? This sorta sounds like some of the hits from back in the days when Danny Owens was in the biz...

Of course, Owens used Memphis cops, among others, as his shooters. They ever solve the Bonnie Lee Sutton murder...or was it one of the triggermen assigned to investigate the murder as well?

Attorney slain in 100 North Main parking garage June 21, 2002

An attorney was shot to death just before 9 a.m. today as he was getting out of his car on the fourth floor of the parking garage of.the 100 North Main Building.

Early reports said he was shot four times by a well dressed man sporting braids.

The shooter then fled on foot and got onto a Memphis Area Transit Authority bus.

I wouldn't be surprised if Cooper uses cops also. Carolyn MacKenzie who runs Citizens for community values here in Memphis [or at least she used to] said the strip clubs are allowed to get away with a lot...even more than the Florida clubs are. And seeing how one club is a block away from one of the east precincts, it's not hard to see who looks the other way. I wouldn't be surprised what else the cops are into.

GailA, I've got a question for you...I'm a Mid-Southerner, but I've been out of the area for the past week or so. Are the Memphis TV stations still treating "Big Mama" Hobbs with the same reverence she received on the day of the shooting? I saw several reporters credit her with "jumping in front on a child" to protect him from the bullets. Given these new revelations, I'd say she was probably trying to stave her stash, or maybe retrieve her Glock 10.

BTW, I saw the breathless coverage on all the Memphis TV stations before I began my trip. My personal favorite was Channel 24, the ABC affiliate. They sent their "pretty boy" anchor, Ken Houston, out to cover the shooting, along with a couple of reporters. Houston and the reporters were working in front of the same camera, side-by-side. When they finished giving Houston some information, he outroed their report by saying "That was ABC 24's (fill in name), reporting live from the scene--while the reporter was standing next to him! Sadly, that kind of stuff is what passes for TV journalism in Memphis....

It has been reported that she has been on government assistance since the 70's.

You are right about most people growing up poor on welfare are not out there doing illegal things. I'm not downing folks who have to have assistance from time to time. Just those who abuse it.

I've missed the news the past several days while going to Nashville for the protest. I tend to forget about the 10pm news until it is to late to watch it.

There's a little more background for you *here*. But it goes well beyond just that.
