SACRAMENTO (AP) - The Senate on Thursday approved a new version of the "Son of Sam" law struck down by the state Supreme Court in February, sending it to the Assembly.

The bill attempts to sidestep the high court's ruling that California's previous ban on felons' profiting from their criminal actions with books or movies is a violation of their free speech rights. Those profits would have gone to the victims instead, under the old 1983 law.

What standards do the legislators use, when they decide the law? Where do they get their idea of what should be a law, and what shouldn't be a law, what should be allowed, and what shouldn't be allowed? Where does that sense that it's not right come from, that feeling that "no, you can't have that"? Where does it arise? It doesn't come just from the law by itself. It comes from morality.

How outrageous! Felons, convicts, and perverts have an inalienable right to commit heinous and sensational crimes and then to profit nicely by selling the rights to their story to a jaded and inured public. The Blue Meanies are stepping all over their God-given free will to be productive, enterprising individuals. I'm going to increase my donation to the LP in protest. < /sarc>
