Donkeys Married To Appease Hindu Rain God
India's Drought Aggravated By Heat Wave
Posted: 2:29 p.m. EDT June 20, 2002
NEW DELHI, India -- The drought-plagued residents of a small village in southern India organized a ceremonial wedding for two donkeys to appease the Hindu god of rain, a news report said Thursday.
Dressed up like a bride and groom, the donkeys were escorted to a temple in the village of Sakkayanayakanur in Tamil Nadu state on Wednesday, the Press Trust of India reported.
There, a local priest chanted prayers and led the donkeys in a ritual ceremony to propitiate the rain god, Varuna. The beasts were then led in a procession that ended with a wedding feast -- for the donkeys and local villagers.
The donkey wedding was the second to be held in the small Indian village, which like much of the country has endured months of drought, aggravated by a heat wave that has claimed hundreds of lives. Temperatures in some areas have soared as high as 118 degrees.
The seasonal monsoons, which feed the agricultural economy of Tamil Nadu, have started late in parts of southern India this year.

No culture is better or superior to any other. Yes. This is why we must abandon our western, euro-centric worldview. We just don't know enough about the ancient, eastern, enlightened, time honored, (and far superior) practice of donkey weddings to solve the drought problem.

Guys, this isn't so bad. That rain god is a lot easier to appease than the bloodthirsty Allah. What's so bad about a little vicarious donkey sex if it eventually brings rain?

Perhaps they could send some people over to train our weathermen in some new techniques. I can just see our local meterologist having fun with a donkey and insuring us this will move the warm front into the area...

Praying on a computer! Is that why my computer keeps crashing?

It would be a great experiment to bring two donkeys to a bunch of liberal churches from coast to coast and ask the priest or minister to marry them.
I bet if you threatened to go to the media and accused them of "intolerance" and "cruelty to animals" a large number would cave and go ahead with the ceremony!
