When hotel workers won new contracts with big hotels on the Las Vegas strip last month, the deals represented a triumph for a growing force in the American labor movement: Hispanic women.

Many of the union members at the bargaining table were Hispanic and female. The union, Culinary Local 226 of the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union, forced casino operators to agree to their demands -- although tourism still hasn't recovered from the slowdown that followed the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

Legit question here. Does anyone know if you have to be a "legal" immigrant to belong to this union? Inquiring minds want to know. It would be funny if Vegas is being taken to the cleaners by illegals.

Vegas has become a horrible place to visit. They charge too much, the food is bad, all the streets are being perpetually torn up and the traffic is a nightmare.

Used to be a nice place with friendly people before it became a lefty union town.

I never paid attention as to how the unions do it, but I do know that the hiring practices of casinos are VERY strict. Those phony papers that Hispanics buy just don't cut it. However, some other business do accept the OBVIOUSLY-phony "social security cards", etc. Too bad all of America doesn't follow the good example of Las Vegas Casinos.

And the reason why the maid industry is increasingly Hispanic is because they are willing to work hard and do a good job. Plus, they are respectful to their bosses. Those are qualities ANY business looks for in a worker. Too bad so many American Citizens have lost that work ethic.

Another thing about a lot of the Hispanics ... they save their money so that they can buy a house as soon as possible. That's very important to them. I asked one a couple of weeks ago if when she was growing up as a little girl in Guatemala if she ever dreamed that she'd live in the United States and own such a pretty house. She said that as far back as she could remember, she KNEW she was going to come to this country. That was her dream, and she made it come true. And I guarantee she loves this country more and is more of an American than a bunch of those left-wing jerks I see running around.

By the way, almost every Hispanic I know learned English their first year (with NO schooling). After a couple of years, they became very proficient in speaking our language. And NONE of them are on welfare or get subsidies.

But I am talking of Hispanics I know personally. I know there are exceptions, which some ego-deflated flamer will be sure to point out to me (and which I will ignore).
