Shortly after U.S. Atty. Patrick Fitzgerald's news conference on Wednesday--where he announced the indictment of top Republican pol Roger "The Hog" Stanley--a few reporters sighed.

They weren't painful sighs.

But sighs they were.

"He's just won't make a good sound bite," said one reporter. "We tried, but he just won't do it."

Politicians, even the morons, can make with the sound bites. They wave their arms. They emote.

It's obvious that Fitzgerald--who stubbornly refuses to address his sound bite problem--is a lousy politician.

"Bribing public officials is an unacceptable way of doing business," said Fitzgerald, in a bad sound bite.

Illinois, and Chicago in particular, is what is known as a target-rich environment. Let's hope that Fitzgerald continues to get all the ammo he needs.

When you have a mayor for life and a state legislature that is ruled by long time players like Madigan, you get this kind of target rich environment. I like Fitzgerald, and I heard through friends in the biz, that he was brought in specifically to indict Gov. Ryan. This summer should be entertaining.

I will be convinced of Fitzgerald's sincerity when he goes after Mike Tristano (Lee Daniels' henchman). Tristano is the one who brought Roger Stanley back after Stanley was fired in 1995.

And if I'm guessing right, I'd say Tristano is also the one feeding information to Fitzgerald.

So Fitzgerald gets the credit, and Tristano will walk.
