Did anyone else catch this show? I was amazed at the talent, but was a bit put-off by that cocky British judge Simon. He's rude and mean to the contestants...obviously trying to outdo Anne Robinson in the "rudest British host on American televison" category.
Given American youth's obsession with horrid rap music, I was expecting this show to be a hip-hop kind of show but was pleasantly surprised that the contestants mostly did covers of songs from the 70s and 80s.
Did anyone else catch last night's show?

I will deny it to the death, but yes, I watched it. I thought it was, well, fun. I began to think that possibly the UK judge was being the "bad guy" to spice it up a bit.

The Guy and I watched it, and frankly I thought it was hilarious. Especially the first episode, with all those hideous no-talent adolescents. You just had to love the New York chick who, when taxed with not singing one correct note, explained, "I wasn't trying to sing the right notes."

I agree! I think that may be my excuse for everything now! "I was not trying to drive the speed limit", "I was not trying to do my job well". How about the woman who said "those judges don't know anything". Huh?
To: HennepinPrisoner
I watched it with my daughter. I agree about being surprised by some of the music----pleasantly so. Say a Little Prayer, which alot of females sang last week, is one of my faves. Will watch tonight to see who survives from last night's performance. (We voted for Kelli who sang "I Will Always Love You"). In fact I better return later in case someone reveals anything----I'm on west coast time.

I wanted to add that the first show, especially, showed several cases of self-esteem gone totally off the charts. LOL

luckodeirish: I will come out of the closet and admit that I am a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan---there, does that make you feel any better about watching American Idol? :)
I agree that the UK judge is just spicing it up a bit, but I think he could tone it down a bit. Last night, he told Jim Verraros that if he won, "..our mission will have failed".
Guess what? Jim has advanced to the Top 10.
Xenalyte, nice to see a fellow Houston Freeper is watching this show as well....I know my profile still says Minnesota, I just haven't updated my State Page yet!

(even if you did read it, there are still two other contestants whose names I haven't posted..so I didn't spoil it all the way.) :)

Well, yes it does. My other favorite is "Animal Precinct" where ASPCA agents arrest losers who have abused or neglected their pets.

it is worth noticing that this show has garnered big audience WITHOUT voyeuristic nonsense, or gratuitous sex and conflict, ala survivor, sallyjesse, oprah, etc.
it has presented absolutely acceptable family type entertainment without stooping to the gutter.
when the media says they only provide what people want, in terms of sex, violence and the profane, they are full of crap.

I'll have to agree...I don't have to worry about my sister getting mad at me for letting her son watch it at my house.
And from FOX, of all networks...whouda thunk?
To: HennepinPrisoner
in any one sided marketplace, the alternative is a huge competitive advantage. foxnews proved this. so did rush and am talk radio.
entertainment such as idol is another example.
if there were more, many who have tuned out would return.
the product dictates demand.

To: HennepinPrisoner
No, you didn't ruin anything. I posted my comment and went to another topic. My daughter and I were glad that Kelli didn't end up winning as she displayed poor "sportsmanship" at the end. I have been impressed at how supportive of each other the kids have been, but the camera focused on Kelli who was sulking at the end, refusing to join in with everyone else whooping it up. We plan on watching next week, too.

Hey, that's Tah-MEE-ka to you! ;-)

Saw tonight's episode...this bunch was horrible....I voted for the first one (Alexis Lopez?)
Simon was right...that guy that did that 'laugh' in the middle was terrible...that laugh made me roll my eyes and was not surprised at all that Simon mentioned it.
And Simon was also right about the guy that did the cover of "Careless Whisper" (he said the guy 'shouted' the song)....the guy should NOT have chosen that song....it's really not his 'style'.
And what was the deal with that mophead guy at the end? His voice was actually decent...but becuase of his 'busy' hair, I chose not to vote for him.
He did not have the 'American Idol' look.
:o)
Anyone else care to comment? Who did everyone else vote for tonight?
To: HennepinPrisoner
My daughter and I are having fun watching and we often match up with the judges. We both said the one guy was shouting during his song, too! We voted for Justin because we were captivated by his voice. Before he sang (last) we were going to go with Angela. Justin won out because he does NOT have a nose ring! LOL
To: HennepinPrisoner
For some reason I skimmed right over your remarks about the mophead guy----that's who we voted for! Ha. I agree, he didn't have the "look" exactly, but he does have a presence and a great voice.
To: HennepinPrisoner
Alexis should have been chosen as one of the top three! Even the judges thought so. Oh, well. Next week I won't have access to a computer though I hope to watch Tuesday night.
