Follow-ups: The Instapundit caught Debbie Schlussel's NY Post column on the Caribou coffee flap that sums things up very well.
So it's a coffee war: Starbucks, headed by a man who condemns terrorism and decries anti-Semitism, versus its nearest rival, Caribou, owned by a company whose investments are cleared by a cleric who cheers terrorism. In these parts you can get coffee here at the store and Thelma's Country Kitchen, so we don't get to play in the coffee wars, but when we play, we play to win. So I have to point out that the First Islamic Bank owns some other US companies:
WaterMark Paddlesports, Inc.And then there's their Real Estate Investments and their Asset Management of "Islamically acceptable assets". What's good for Caribou should be good for all.
"WaterMark is a holding company for two of the leading kayak manufacturers in the US: Perception, Inc. and Dagger, Inc. Perception, Inc. is the largest manufacturer of kayaks in the US with revenue of approximately $20 million, which represents approximately 10% of the US paddle sports market (kayaks, canoes, paddles and other accessories)."
DVT Corporation
"DVT is the price/performance leader in the machine vision systems industry. Machine vision systems are used to inspect products and control machines such as robots and packaging machinery. DVT develops, manufactures and markets inspection devices for many of the worlds most prominent manufacturers including General Motors, Ford, Nissan, Allied Signal and 3-M; technology companies such as IBM and Motorola; as well as consumer products companies such as SmithKline Beecham, Procter & Gamble, Nabisco, Kraft Foods and H.J. Heinz."
B.R. Lee Industries
"Lee Industries, operating under the LeeBoy brand name, is the leading manufacturer of commercial paving equipment in North America."
Transportation Safety Technologies, Inc.
"TST is a manufacturer of specialty electrical components and safety products for the automotive, truck and emergency vehicles industries in the United States. One of TSTs most promising products is the patented SCAN obstacle detection system ("ODS")."
Cirrus Industries, Inc.
"Cirrus is the third largest manufacturer of single-engine, piston-powered, general aviation aircraft in the world."
Medifax EDI
"Medifax EDI is a leading provider of information processing services to the health care industry in the United States, processing over 140 million transactions per year for more than 120,000 customers."
Al-Qaradawi heads the Shari'ah (Islamic religious law) Supervisory Board of First Islamic Investment Bank, which owns 87.8 percent of Caribou. (First Islamic's directors and officers are mainly Saudi sheiks.)
In a religious fatwah (decree) urging a boycott of all Israeli and U.S. goods, he wrote, "Now we see our brothers and children in Al-Aqsa and the blessed land of Palestine generously sacrificing their blood, giving their souls willingly in the way of Allah. All Muslims must help them with whatever power they have."
The Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram also reports that Al-Qaradawi denies "that bin Laden should give himself up," and opposes "taking part in the U.S. coalition against [sic] Afghanistan."
In yet another religious edict on "the enemies of Islam," he attacks "the U.S.A. and . . . the world Jewish community. Jihad is obligatory."
If you don't like the guy's politics, then don't buy his stuff. There's stuff I don't buy for that same reason (e.g. "Ben & Jerry's" ice cream). Sounds like a very simple solution to me.
The fact that I compete with them has absolutely nothing to do with it.
Anyone out there know how much gubmint money Cirrus got when they came to Duluth MN.,and, how involved was Wellstone in the deal?
I'm not search lazy,I'm just at,um,work.....
Christians don't blow themselves up attempting to kill all who disagree with them. How silly of you to ask such a question in the context of the ongoing war on terrorism!
You sound much like an islamist sympathizer. We are at war with islamists;, perhaps you should consider what has happened, historically, in times of war to those who "sympathize" with the enemy!!
On the other hand, perhaps I misinterpretted your remarks. If so, what's YOUR point?
Some do, of course. Eric Rudolph certainly didn't have any qualms about shooting some guy for God. And the Montana Freemen certainly had no problem with guns and ammo, nor did the Koresh followers.
OTOH, my neighbors down the street, who are Muslim, seem ill-disposed toward strapping on the TNT.
Your stereotype is just hogwash, that's MY point.
Some do, of course.
BS! Islam is THE problem, not christianity or judaism or anybody else. Until all those who raise their kids to be homicide bombers are eradicated, and these people exist ONLY within islam, there will be no peace.
You clearly have an agenda which denies reality, so I'm outta here and you're left with your pathetic lack of self esteem.
Have a nice eternity!
Noooo!!!! Say it isn't so! Are you sure about this? I thought Cirrus was partnered with an Israeli company.
They may be. But statistically Muslims are more likely than any other religious group to blow other people up because they hate them for their religion.
They also are more likely to excuse doing it as well. Kind of like you seem to want to do.
That might be (right now), but I can't somehow bring myself to condemn "Islam" and all who follow that religion because of a few kooks. Might as well say "let's destroy Germany," because statistically Germans are more likely than any other nationality to commit mass murder.
There is a big difference between Muslims and Non-muslims: Muslims demand that only Muslims be allowed to live.
Its more than a few kooks, its a great many kooks, and an even greater number of excusers and enablers.
Might as well say "let's destroy Germany," because statistically Germans are more likely than any other nationality to commit mass murder.
that's exactly what we did.
"Cirrus Design, maker of the SR20 and SR22 piston singles, got the investment it has been seeking for the past couple of years. Crescent Capital, the U.S. arm of a Middle Eastern investment company, has funneled $100 million into Cirrus, a stake that gives it around 60 percent ownership of the company and three of the five seats on the board of directors."
