The schools, known as madrassas, would be shut down and fined if they fail to register with a government oversight board.

Oh brother. I can just imagine the dialog during the registration process:

GOV'T AGENT: "Name of your school?"
TEACHER: "Jihad Against The Great Satan Madrassa"

GOV'T AGENT: "Purpose of your curriculum?"
TEACHER: "Instill hatred for America and love of our great leader, Usama bin Laden, may he live 1,000 years."

GOV'T AGENT: "Number of students?"
TEACHER: "250 boys, age 5 to 12"

GOV'T AGENT: "Thank you for your time. Here is your certificate. May Allah's blessings be upon you."
TEACHER: "And you."

More power to Musharrafat but unless he stops the flow of money from the saudi princes to the schools, this effort is a lost cause. They'll lie, adapt a secular curriculum for a while and then go back to their jihadi philosophy flush with cash from the US, IMF, and the WorldBAnk in addition to having their coffers replenished with Saudi dollars later.
