The military can only be part of the response. Putting the military in the form of, mechanized infantry and air cavalry units on patrol would have to be backed by diplomatic action letting the Mexican government know that this invasion ends now or they will be at war with us.

Sorry, kiddo. Mech infantry and air cavalry units (the latter of which do not exist in the current TO&E) are very thin when it comes to trigger-pullers. Unfortunately, this mission requires a lot of trigger-pullers.

You're visualizing US troops acting as INS agents or Border Patrol officers. That isn't the mission. The mission is a closed border. No more foot traffic across the border for tourisnm or day labor or any other purpose for that matter.

OK, your intent is to clobber the economy of Mexico and the border regions of the United States, not to control the border.

With the military doing the border patrolling, the domestic LEs can do their job at certified crossing points for truck traffic which would be delivering to consolidation points for transfer to US trucks anyway.

I take it you would merely throw away the NAFTA agreement, then.

BP and INS is overwhelmed and needs to be reassigned to their proper role, controlling the checkpoints.

It's called the BORDER PATROL because they are supposed to PATROL the BORDER, not stand around next to the coffee pot at the designated crossing points.

We're facing an invasion of mostly unarmed workers being sent here by their country's politicians.

Then invade Mexico or shut up.

They could be stopped quickly by the message delivered to Mexican diplomats once the troops are in place to demonstrate that the diplomats are delivering a serious message.

And how would they do that?

Why should I have anything against a draft? We're at war, aren't we?

Greetings from Uncle Sam, Twodees! Your unselfish patriotism is appreciated. Please report for your induction physical immediately.

Oh, I forgot, you're that guy who knows EFT about EFT and who posts from work from the time you punch in until the time you go home.

Why does the mission need so many riflemen? Aircav and mobile infantry are exactly what border patrolling reqires. The job is herding unarmed civilians back to where they came from, not engaging enemy infantry.

The Border Patrol is civilian law enforcement, so their job is enforcing the law, not stopping an invasion. Why keep them at a job they've never been able to handle since their formation?

NAFTA isn't a treaty. It has no force of law whatsoever and can be dropped like a hot rock at a moment's notice by a simple act of congress. It's a trade agreement not a treaty.

Apparently you think I wouldn't answer a draft summons. I'm 49 years old, but I would volunteer without being called if subject to the draft, just as I did when I carried a draft card in the early 70's. Maybe this time they wouldn't turn me down, who knows?

We don't need to invade Mexico or to go to war with them unless they prove willing to force the issue. Their illegal invaders can be stopped without much of a show of force. We do need at least a token show of force, apparently. Having a president who smooches up to the Mexican politicians who are doing this to us is pretty maddening. As long as that little daddy's boy is in office, nothing will be done anyway.
