It's amazing how much resistance there is to this idea. Apparently, many of the "close the borders NOW" folks are perfectly content to leave a bunch of soldiers out in the desert Southwest with little supervision, lots of temptation, and little clear mission. They don't want to have the military do what it CAN do effectively; they prefer it to do what it's manifestly NOT intended to do and leave the problems that drive illegal immigration in place and unsolved.

Obviously, we need to make our borders secure in order to thwart the entry of terrorists from known terrorism-breeding countries. But if we are simply trying to slow down or stop illegal immigration from Mexico, there are better and more effective ways to go about it. Yes we should increase the number of BP agents to make it as difficult as possible for illegal aliens to get through, but as has been mentioned numerous times here on many different illegal immigration threads, we need to go after the employers who hire the illegals, and we need to cut off all social services to illegals. What would be the point for an illegal alien to come to the U.S. from Mexico if they knew that they couldn't get either work or welfare here. That, along with changing the "anchor baby" amendment and revisiting the SCOTUS ruling that mandates that illegal alien children have a right to a public education at U.S. taxpayer's expense, would do a lot to reduce the flow of illegal immigration from Mexico to a trickle.

It absolutely blows me away that we were able to man the borders between East and West Germany for over four decades. We have over 50,000 troops stationed in Korea effectively shutting down a border many hundreds of miles long. The total cost for these two efforts have cost the American taxpayers tens of billions of dollars over the years and yet our elected officials look at controlling the borders with Mexico as an impossible task. PULEEZE.
