At age 84, Ernie Harwell is in his 55th year of broadcasting, 42 of them with the Tigers. He's retiring after this season.
As a kid in Georgia, Ernie Harwell knew what he wanted to eat: "fried ficken." He also figured out that one of his friends had a "fister."

If Ernie's not doing the play by play, I can't listen to the game. If Ernie's doing a play by play for paint drying on the side of the barn, I'll listen.

I grew up listening to Ernie Harwell call the Tiger games. My Mother and Grandmother listened to Tiger baseball while munching on New Era Potato Chips.
God bless him in his well-deserved retirement.

When I saw the New Era Potato Chip name, it brought back a memory. Then I saw the signature, and the eyes began to brim with tears.
