I think you are right...dad was never a churchgoer, except on special occasions...Mom was the avid churchgoer..

But dad was an avid reader, and always had at least five books he was reading at any given time....and the Bible was always in that stack...sometimes you would find him, with Bible in one hand, a cig in the other, and he would be mulling over what he had read...I do believe his Bible reading, brought him out of his bad drinking times...

Your intuition is probably correct. The Lord can pull us out of whatever hole we're in. Whenever we ask Him to do so.

And not before, and not until we ask. Period. imo
