Nevado del Ruiz-Strong seismic activity

Nevado del Ruiz Volcano (Colombia, South America) started a new cycle of strong seismic activity.

On June 9, 2002, at 23 hours (local time) a swarm of volcano-tectonic earthquakes was recorded by the seismic network. Following that swarm houndreds of hybrid earthquakes were recorded. More than 1300 earthquakes occurred in 16 hours. This seismicity continued for three days. About 2300 earthquakes were detected. This is the highest number of events per day recorded at Nevado del Ruiz volcano since 1985. Seismic energy release reached high values too. The code is now in orange color.

Many earthquakes were felt by people walking near the volcano. Jet-like sounds were also reported at the moment of occurrence of some of the hybrid events. No ash emmissions were reported. Strong smell to SO2 were reported near the summit.

The seismic activity has decreased now.

On November 13, 1985, an eruption of Nevada del Ruiz melted glaciers at the summit, creating a lahar (mud flow) that engulfed the town of Armero, killing approximately 23,000 people in less than two hours.

It's interesting; there was a sizeable quake just yesterday in Japan. If this thing is ready to blow,
there'll be a big quake down there. The ring of fire having a little indigestion, it seems.

I have to agree with you; the spamming IS getting annoying. I know it's for a good cause,
but if it was ANYTHING else, they'd be deleted in a blink. A bit of over-kill, ladies and gents.

Jun 14, 2002 Desert Earthquake Hits Near Yucca Mountain; No Injuries or Damage Reported

By Ken Ritter

Associated Press Writer

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A mild earthquake rumbled beneath the desert early Friday near Yucca Mountain, the federal government's proposed site for a nuclear waste repository.

No damage or injuries were immediately reported.

The quake had a preliminary magnitude of 4.4 and hit about 5:40 a.m., 75 miles northwest of Las Vegas and about 3 miles beneath the surface, said scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colo.

Allen Benson, a federal Department of Energy spokesman for the Yucca Mountain project in Las Vegas, told The Associated Press that about 100 scientists and employees at the site on Friday were not reporting any damage.

Yucca Mountain, about 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, is the site that President Bush picked in February to store the nation's spent commercial, industrial and military nuclear waste beginning in 2010.

Benson said that while operations have been scaled back since February, employees and scientists are continuing to monitor scientific studies and a five-mile tunnel bored about 1,000 feet beneath the volcanic ridge.

Nevada opposes the Yucca Mountain project, and Congress is debating whether to override Gov. Kenny Guinn's April veto of the presidential selection.

President Bush in February approved building a nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, saying 20 years of study had found the ridge of volcanic rock to be a safe place to store nuclear material.

Opponents of the project have cited the possibility of earthquakes as one reason to reject Yucca Mountain as the site.

The waste, expected to remain radioactive for more than 10,000 years, would be buried 1,000 feet below ground. The Energy Department has said the earliest the Yucca facility could open is 2010.

Hmmm.  23 is the biblical number for Death.  Time to move to higher ground.

Colombia is such a beautiful country. The people are endearing, especially the converso Jewish descendants of Antioquia who speak a Spanish dialect that I've read has many similarities to Sephardic Ladino.

I believe it's been time for the inhabitants of Colombia to move to higher ground since November 29, 1947, when Colombia abstained from voting for the end of the British mandate AND furthermore Colombian representative to the United Nations made a speech against Israel. Later in 1976 they made other pro-Palestinian, anti-Jewish maneuvers. Excerpts of speech, etc., from Colombia and the United Nations, Section 2 - MIDDLE EAST, PALESTINE, ISRAEL, JERUSALEM

Ruiz-Tolima Volcanic Massif (Cordillera Central) The Ruiz-Tolima volcanic massif comprises five different formerly ice-clad stratovolcanoes ("nevados"): El Ruiz, El Cisne, Santa Isabel, El Quindío, El Tolima

"Saint" Jezebel is the one in the middle:

Last paragraph on Smithsonian Museum Volcanic Activity Report speaks of Isabel, Cisne (swan) and Arenas (sand).

03/88 (SEAN 13:03) Ash emission follows earthquake swarm February data are from the Boletín Informativo, published monthly by the Observatorio Vulcanológico de Colombia. The number of high-frequency events increased significantly in the second half of February, totaling 707 for the month, as compared to 280 in January (figure 7). Hypocenters, at 1-5 km depth, were clustered in three zones: near Nevado de Santa Isabel (~10 km SW of the active Arenas Crater) on 10 February; to the NE at Nevado del Cisne (~6 km SW of Arenas) on 21 February; and an especially active sequence at Arenas 12-22 February..."

Nice catch!  Seems that quakes and accidents are rife in areas of major conflict and drug activity:  Afghanistan, Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Columbia.  There are serious warnings about and the Word says people will cry to have the mountains fall on them so something worse is coming and we should each be prepared.  The link in post #1 above shows that in former eruptions in the steep valleys, the lahars were sometimes 50m deep!  That's 163.33 feet deep and a lot of mountain to fall on anyone.  Luke 13.
