A Hong Kong man accused of faking his death in the September 11 attacks to avoid prosecution in an earlier case has pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice at a New York court.
Steven Chin Leung, 34, was originally charged with passport fraud in April 2001 and released on bail.
Leung pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice, two counts of passport fraud and bail jumping and faces up to 45 years in prison at sentencing on August 22.
Federal prosecutors alleged that after the terrorist attacks, Leung called his attorney and city officials, posing as his brother.
He falsely claimed that Steven Chin Leung was an independent contractor at Cantor Fitzgerald and had been missing since terrorists smashed airliners into the World Trade Centre, prosecutors said.
Cantor Fitzgerald, a bond brokerage, lost 658 of its nearly 1,000 employees in the trade centre attack.
