And what would you rather see that money going to? The returns we get from pure scientific research far exceed the initial monetary input. Without pure research and the resultant engineering, we would still be swinging from trees.

That's absurd. Nothing whatsoever is gained from peering at planets way out in the nether-regions. Can you name one thing? Satisfaction of blind curiosity is about all I can think of. Now, I will concede some gains have been had from manned trips to the moon, but things like this, and the joke called SETI are an offense to the tax payers.
