Dutch Sends 40 Refugee to Nigeria
The Netherlands Post ^ | June 12 2002 | The Associated Press

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — In a mass deportation, Dutch authorities sent 40 Nigerian asylum seekers back to their home country Wednesday, the 10th expulsion of illegal immigrants this year.

The Justice Ministry said the Nigerians were escorted on a special flight by Dutch soldiers. Some of the refugees had criminal records, it said.

Police are allowed to apprehend immigrants only if they are suspected of a crime, but that could change when the new government takes over next month.

Dutch newspapers reported Wednesday that the three coalition parties agreed any immigrant who cannot show valid residency papers should not be allowed to stay. The report said the parties also want to set up special police squads to detain and deport illegal immigrants.

Special police units would ensure that immigrants lacking a residence permit will no longer ``be wandering around in our country,'' Gerrit Zalm, leader of the Liberal Party, was quoted as saying by the Algemeen Dagblad newspaper.

In another effort to step up the fight against illegal immigration, the upcoming government also plans to tighten rules for marriage with someone from outside the Netherlands.

A permit for a partner will only be given to an applicant older than 21— rather than the current age of 18 — who earns at least $1,410 per month.

Immigration authorities began using special flights last year to speed up the expulsion of rejected asylum seekers.

``The alternative is transporting them one by one escorted by security officers on regular flights,'' said Martin Bruinsma, spokesman of the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

Hundreds of refugees have been sent to Congo, Cameroon, Romania, Suriname, Togo, Kosovo and Bulgaria since the beginning of this year.

We can only hope.
Being an immigrant myself and knowing how hard it was for me to enter the country legally from Western Europe,
I don't know why they let some people get off so easy, being here illigally
Only thing I can think off it is not PC.

The VVD (right-winged leberal) has been shouting this kind of stuff for years, but never did what they said. The CDA (Christian conservatives) also want to make things thighter.

The PvdA, the main contributer to the problems, all of the sudden (a few months after Fortuyn appeard) wanted to impose stricter laws too.

Only the Green Left is still opposed.

I do not think that will be changed. And there are not so many students from foreign countries that people are worried. Both the sutudent visas and the ourist ones never were mentioned in any campaign.

"... Only the Green Left is still opposed."

Lovely. The peaceful ones that shoot up the place like they always accuse Americans of doing.

Knighthawk, link no longer works. Could you perhaps supply a URL for this story? It's for an e-mail daily out here. Thanks in advance, Byron.

What a great idea! Now if we could just copy it in the US...

I used Google to locate it, and yesterday it worked. I can't believe it's gone. I can't find anything about it.

I searched in the Dutch press, but they only got their own stuff, from the ANP, not AP. I located this article about three deportations totaling 54 Nigerians escorted by 108 Dutch soldiers:

Illegaal weg per charter
