"We will be blessedly fortunate if what passes for security along our borders and with regard to our immigration policy doesn't end up biting us hard down the road"

FERVENTLY agreed. And prayed for frequently. I was hoping all active and reserve NG troops would be called into action here, to patrol our borders. Our military and paramilitary is stretched pretty thin. It really worries me.

"The problem is, they are setting precedent."

The DoJ is citing Supreme Court precedent from the 1940's. It could hold up. They seem to think it will. I don't know.

"I’m not informed on all the legal intricacies, but I think that Congress gave the administration all the privileges to wage war without the burden of abiding by the rules of war, which were never envisioned for the WMD carrying, covert operations, terroristic, non-national and barbaric nature of our enemy. And now we have to act faster than we can make up rules."

You believe correctly. 'Course, the reason Congress made this extraordinary request of the president has less to do with a "WMD carrying, covert operations, terroristic, non-national and barbaric nature of our enemy"....and everything to do with Congress covering it's collective derriere. If anything goes wrong, Congress (Daschle/McCain/Clinton/Gephardt) is completely covered...and will be right up front with the noose to hang the president and the JCoS should ANYTHING go wrong.

IMO, that's why the administration has seemed to OVER cautious to many of us.

The BIG push to flood the country with all manner of left-leaning third-worlders clearly came from RATS who want to re-engineer the society to make this a socialist paradise. I don't see any Republicans arguing for that. All they're arguing for is cheap labor.

True, the GOP isn't hoping for a socialist paradise, but there have been many on FR and elsewhere who've lauded the so-called "latino outreach" championed by the RNC (which amounts to pandering and little in the way of ideas), who've convinced themselves that if Republicans would just whistle a Democrat tune, Illegals and their friends and families will be casting conservative ballots forevermore.

"Natural Republicans," and "future Republicans" and all that.

Maybe... I've seen speculation regarding that, but never really saw the evidence. I don't recall anyone in the administration upset with the language. The reason I mentioned seemed to make more sense to me. Also, I find it hard to believe that if Bush wanted a Declaration of War, Daschle/McCain/Clinton/Gephardt would have risked saying no in front of the whole nation in September.

WHO'S language? Not the Constitution. The Bush administration has been citing constitutional precedent from the start. For everything it's done, starting with the precedent of the Barbary Pirates, in which war was declared aginst a group, then later a back dated "writ was done" in order to tidy things up....no, the Bush admin has been careful about that.

The reason I mentioned seemed to make more sense to me. Also, I find it hard to believe that if Bush wanted a Declaration of War, Daschle/McCain/Clinton/Gephardt would have risked saying no in front of the whole nation in September.

He DID ask for a declaration of war, and Congress DID drcline, citing the 18whatever it is precdent...err...bbl...my daughter in law is having trouble...she's 6 mos pregnant...distracted...look it up!

Laz, you want to actually CHARGE an American citizen with a crime? Isn't "because we said so" enough when a bureaucrat wants to engage in extra-constitutioinal behavior? You must be reading the founding documents again.

I don't see the appropraite amount of foam running off your chin, you "sickening" un-American. How dare you question our government? Who cares if you have no evidence or facts? All you need to know is that our executive branch would never do anything wrong or incompetent and all our leaders are, always have been and always will be as pure as goldilocks's panties.

BTW, whoever used the term "sickening" to describe someone who questions whether our government is overstepping itself better hope I never become an executive, because I could be a real bastard when I want to. I'll use your own tard-logic standard to whisk your non-thinking ass away for not having enough concern for constitutional issues.

That is after all very un-American in my eyes.

"WHO'S language? "

The language of the congressional authorization to use all force necessary

No, Bush did NOT request a declaration of war. It looks like one of those myths that's repeated so often by kooks here that people think its true. Look here:

Congress has not declared war on al Qaeda, nor has the president requested such an explicit declaration.

In all probability, much confusion and unnecessary complication could have been avoided had the President requested, and the Senate insisted on, a formal declaration of war on Afghanistan.

The U.S. Senate unanimously approved a resolution authorizing President Bush to "use all necessary and appropriate force" against the perpetrators. The House of Representatives also was expected to back the bipartisan measure requested by the president.

BTW, My wife's 1 month behind your daughter in-law.

Making assumptions without facts is sickening. No matter what your nationality is. Lazz is on (but not to your apparent extreme) YOUR side. Hystrionics will get you nowhere, bud.

My apologies for jumping into your fight Laz, but I thought that was a LITTLE over the top.

hmm… 2 days ago you wanted to "kill anyone even remotely connected in any way whatsoever to radical Islamists" and now you're upset that an al-Queda operative with US citizenship working to radiate a US city has been held in secret for a month.

So he didn't request stringently enough and 90+ percent of the American people didn't want him to bother with formalities....we wanted him to lay on with the forpower while congress was busy making a collective yellow puddle under their chairs, BEGGING him to to this, citing eighteenth century precedent and covering their political butts.

Congress made the request. It's Bush's fault. Right.

Wishing the best for the three of you.

My daughter in-law's on her way to the hospital right now, and I have no quick way of finding out what's going on with ther except to hang around on the Web, waiting to be messaged.

ake crumb, I don't know what you think I'm saying, but it's not an accurate read of what I wrote. I'm happy with this congressional authorization, and as far as I know, so's Bush. It's a cluster of thick headed fired up misinformed wannabes generals here who're screaming for a formal Declaration of War. There's also a lot fo 'blame America first' people calling for it, knowing how much it would tie our hands.

I wish her well. But as you probably know, if it's cramps or contractions, it's often nothing. Always good to have a look though.

Laz is very well aware of my sarcasm m'am, trust me on that.

Go back and re-read my post, and quit calling people who question our half-ass half competent Ministries "sickening".

I still want to kill them! Please you're making me out to be a softie, you're going to ruin my reputation!

Key word here is citizen. If he's a citizen, charge the mofo and when found guilty pass me a gun and I'll splash his gray matter all over the town square and have fun doing it.

Don't worry I'm not going wobbly on anyone.
