Let me start this off bluntly. I do not owe McCain jack s--t.Just like no one owes me anything for my 9+ yrs. There are literally hundreds of thousands of military who did as much or a hell of a lot more than McCain. I despise people who try to profit off there military duty. McCain would not have been a pilot had not his father been an admiral. He would have flunked ot of flight shchool. There are hundreds of facts that the press ignore about McCain. They have been brought out on FR many times. He is nothing more than another asshole senator!!!!

Amen Brother! Preach on!

The reason mc cain is a media hero is that he has no principles.
He has already violated the oath he took to defend and uphold the Constitution of the United States of America.

He is actually a democrat. He is one of the parasites that are eating us from within and will do everything in his power to destroy the way of life we now have.

Look for him to run a third- party campaign to assist hillary in '04.

This is such a laughable idea, I can't even believe McPain has the gaul to propose it. On the other hand, it just gives everyone another reason to turn off the television... advertisers will never buy into it.

If candidates want to get their ideas and messages across, then they need to go see their constituency IN PERSON.

The author of the original article states:

"As the Supreme Court has affirmed, the airwaves belong to the public and Congress is empowered to set terms by which space is leased to TV stations, including a requirement that they carry political ads and serve the public interest."

Let us assume the above statement is true. "Leased to TV stations" implies a contract.

Private business owners, whether an individual, partners, or stockholders, of TV stations have invested their money in these TV stations knowing what the terms of the contract are.

The 5th amendment of the U.S. Constitution states:

"...nor shall private property be taken for public use without just compensation."

If Congress wishes to change the terms of the contract to require "free air time" for political campaigns, then the proper and constitutional method for accomplishing that desire is:

1--wait until the lease contract expires and present a new lease contract with that change

2--buyout the current unexpired lease contracts and present a new lease contract with that change

In both scenarios, the private property of the investors is protected and the investors are free to choose if they wish to participate under the terms of the new lease contract.

But Senator McCain is a socialist to the core and would not understand the sanctity of private property. I guess he learned his socialist lessons well while staying at the Hanoi Hilton.

Plus he is a known corrupted politician from the kick back savings and loan scandal of the Keating Five in the late 1980's and his corrupt behavior has not changed.

McCain is a typical LIBERAL, he wants other people to pay his way. If Ariz. does not boot him, I will be very surprised.

A website friendly to McCain is conducting a poll on free TV time...but, I'm not going to list it because I know the disasterous effects of FReeping that will be wrought (done purely because of hatred of a fine American patriot)!

No, MD, we would FReep the poll because FREE TV time for candidates is just plain socialism.

AND SINCE you won't post the poll, I'd be happy to, as a public service for the Freepers who are dedicated to conservatism...

VOTE HERE to let McCain's Straight Talk America people know what you think about FREE TV TIME for Candidates!

PS - and I'm PINGING a few friends to help out in the poll!

Well said. Nothing is free. Someone will pay for those ads. What costs advertisers more will cost consumers more and voila! we end up with the tab yet again. It's socialism plain and simple.

That's why I demand free television time for candidates, as partial compensation for the license which protects broadcasters from competition, and for they use of my (and your) airwaves.

So because you think the television stations are getting something for nothing, you will force them to give up a portion of their advertising revenue.

Then to make up this shortfall, they will raise the rates for the advertising time that remains.

To make up for the increase in their advertising budgets, advertisers will raise the prices on their goods and services.

And when you go to the store, you will pay more for your products.

You’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you made somebody pay for some perceived injustice, but you’ll be too dense to realize it was you.

And just whose property is being taken without compensation?

The broadcast station consists of equipment and employees. That takes money to acquire and maintain. Selling air time is the only means of recovering the costs. Forcing a broadcast station to use its equipment and professional staff to provide air time without compensation is simple THEFT of the airtime that could have been sold for necessary revenue to meet expenses. The station broadcast equipment and the labor of the professional staff are the private property of the station owner. The government has no right to seize control over that property.

Improbable as enactment of campaign finance reform once looked, the next step - providing candidates with free television time - looks even more difficult. But it ought to happen.

Anytime employees of the government use the word free you can be assured the taxpayers are going to get it in the end - (literally).
