If the "state" (in the form of a jury of my peers) can end my life.. Can they not also deny me the right to smoke pot, by virtue of their vote?

Obviously, the authoritarian state you advocate, can.

A free state, based on our constitutional republic, -- could not.

Go ahead and smoke pot. Just be prepared to pay the consequences.

No big deal. Go get high. Now. Light up a bong in front of a cop and blow the smoke in his face.

The state has the power to shift the burden and costs of your foolishness back onto your shoulders and force you to accept personal responsibility.

And, after all, acceptance of personal resposnibility is the libertarian way.
