When goose hunting, you should wear a very wide brimmed hat, good sun glasses for eye protection, never look straight up and never look up and say with your mouth wide open, "Wow! Look at all those Geese up there!"
Our younger whacked his first Canadian as it started to come over our blind at about 60 feet up and 50 feet out. He shot and hit the goose he was aiming at, out a flock of several hundred. My older son and I heard the shotgun pellets hit the goose. We both got down as low as we could and didn't look up. We knew what was coming.
Our younger son was standing up and shouting, "I got him, Dad!"
About that time he had to dodge a falling dead goose, and the scared survivors's carpet bombing hit him several times. He was so stunned and messy looking. Of course his bro and I went into convulsions of laughter looking at him (great fatherly and sibling support as usual). The geese circled two more times, and none of us could get another shot off, The younger son was in shock, and we had tears in our eyes looking and laughing at him.

Here's a fascinating fact:
The Canada goose can fly as fast as 60 mph, but usually prefers to go about 40 to 50 mph. They often leave with the passing of a cold front, so, with the aid of a strong tail wind, they can travel an easy 60 to 70 mph. At this rate, they can fly from Hudson Bay to Horicon, a distance of at least 850 miles, in about 15 hours. From here to their wintering grounds in southern Illinois, some 450 miles to the south, requires another 7 to 10 hours.
It's really amazing to see these birds.
Imagine hundreds and hundreds of these birds flying right over your house. The only problem is the noise. What's really cool is you can hear their wings flapping if they are silent and low enough.
When they land, I always thought they looked like little helicoptors.

Beautiful birds - I'm mostly glad that my creature-capping (except for fundraisers) days have come and gone.
I surely won't turn down the meat if a friend offers, however. ;-)

You are correct! There is a park near here which has hundreds of geese and getting worse each year. You see, the geese always return to their nesting areas. It's so overrun now and getting so bad, they want to shoot some and give the birds to the hungry people. Since this area is very conservative, and 12 out of 10 people are hunters (kids in school get a holiday for deer hunting!), there isn't much opposition. And those that do oppose it are laughed at. Hahaha, we had the PETA people here protesting the Ocsar Mayer weiner mobile and they were told to get out of dodge. That was right after they had the nerve to want to rename our beloved Packers to the Pickers or whatever. It was great!
