The trouble may be, however, that the people of TX do not know about Kirk's record in Dallas or his suspected ties to terrorists. Many do not even know that Ann W. Richards considers him her "adopted son."

Kirk is barely trailing Republican John Cornyn in the latest TX Poll. And many of the undecided are minority group voters expected to switch in mass to Kirk as the campaign really gets underway. Thus far, Attorney General Cornyn has done mostly a few fundraisers and next to no traditional campaigning, for he is over-confident. TX may be trying to borrow a page from VA: elect a black to statewide office to show that you aren't racist, particularly in light of the James Byrd tragedy. Of course, the state has already chosen blacks to some statewide judicial posts in the past. But it's only the governor and senators who get the national attention. Moreover, liberal Ann Willis Richards is working nearly full-time to get Kirk elected. She was in El Paso over the weekend to fire up the Democrat troops at the state party convention.
