Personally I don't understand why states take steps to prevent those accused of convicted of capital crimes from killing themselves.

The problem is in separating genuine suicides from "suicides" arranged by Correctional Officers and/or the Police. Without extra efforts to keep things under control, the slide to extrajudicial death squads is slippery and steep.

I was thinking the same thing---about 10 years ago, my wife was murdered by an evil scumbag who was picked up by police in a neighboring state . Strangely enough, he was found hanging in his cell . At the time, I remember thinking that in the "old" South, they were sometimes "shot while trying to escape ".
In this case, I suppose justice was done, but I couldn't help wondering .
