A reported threat by a man armed with a shotgun turned into a weapons investigation Friday, with Modesto police saying the suspect's house held an illegal submachine gun and assault rifles, and a 16-inch rocket-propelled grenade.

Police said they arrested Darrell Wayne Wright, 60, after a brief standoff outside his home at 2906 Roselle Avenue, just north of Floyd Avenue, amid Village I in northeast Modesto.

The 16" RPG, is that length or diameter? Makes a difference.

It was inert, so it doesn't make a difference. I wonder if the "machine-gun" was de-mil'ed?

He told us that he didn't see our uniforms because we were behind some bushes," Steele said.

Lucky cops, lucky homeowner. This could have turned out very bad.

Police said Wright gave his permission for a search of his house, and officers discovered the arms cache: the rocket-propelled grenade, submachine gun and assault rifles, numerous other guns, and a large amount of ammunition.

If this guy is stupid enough to give consent to CA police without a search warrant, he deserves whatever he gets.

At worst, he could have been CHARGED (and probably not convicted) of aggrevated assault for pointing a shotgun. But his propety WAS POSTED, but no reason to point a gun at someone...maybe just brandish it is okay.

But the dumbass had to let the cops in and now he goes to prison.

Note to self: Never, ever let law enforcement in your house without a search warrant.

Note to self: Never ever give a statement to police without an attorney present.

Or maybe it's the radius. It could be one BIIIIG grenade. It might break your shoulder if you tried to fire it, though...

"Detective Doug Ridenour said police responded after getting a call from a Sacramento motorist who reported that he went down a driveway by mistake while looking for another residence and was confronted by a shotgun-wielding man.

The motorist pulled into Wright's driveway at about 10:45 a.m., driving past "private drive" and "keep out" signs posted at the entrance.

Police said Wright walked outside, pointed the shotgun at the man and racked a shell in the chamber.

Are you kidding? That used to happen at my house all the time, except, I go ahead and shoot the gun in the air. Lately, I just keep the gate closed and locked though. (I also have signs that say: "Private driveway-do not enter," "Beware of dog" and "private property-keep out" ) My relatives 'always call before they come.'

safely detonated the grenade in the front yard of Wright's home late in the afternoon. It turned out that the device was inactive.

In other words, they blew up an inert display piece. It didn't detonate, the explosives charge the cops used detonated. So many of these stories just drop right out of the paper after breathless prose by ignorant journalists who believe a bunch of hype by equally ignorant police officers. Even odds that the so-called fully automatic machine gun, isn't. Of course, it may be true that he does have illegal assault guns, since about any military semiautomatic rifle in Ca is illegal nowadays, isn't it?

These things are worth repeating:

Never, ever let law enforcement in your house without a search warrant.

Never, ever give a statement to police without an attorney present.

If you refuse a search of your house, such refusal is not admissible in court, so don't worry about it making you look bad. Just tell 'em you want an attorney, and then shut your mouth. They can't continue to question you after you say you want an attorney.

What's he think, he's living in a free country with a right to keep and bear arms and own private property?
Sheesh! The delusions some people have.

Yep!

The guy thought he was visiting a friend of his (notice the mistaken address issue), and got greeted with a guy pointing a shotgun at him. Very stupid on the gun-owners part. Not every situation of this type calls for locking and loading.

As for firing a round in the air...what goes up must come down. People who ignore this rule will eventually annoy their neighbors. Said annoyance sometimes turns lethal for the guy shooting into the air.

"He came out of his house and he was holding a shotgun and we were standing about 10 feet apart," Steele said. "We identified ourselves as police officers and ordered him to drop the shotgun, but he wouldn't."

If he wasnt pointing his gun at the two people (cops) hiding behind bushes why should we believe he was pointing his gun at the guy in the car earlier?

When is the leftist media going to learn that inert grenades are legal and by their very nature are no longer grenades? After that reporting, why should we believe he has a machine gun and illegal assault rifles?

Correct. And, don't move the body. All these things complicate the investigation.

illegal assault rifles

This is basically a semi-auto with a pistol grip rather than just a shoulder stock. In other words, "assault rifle" is meant to apply to all semi-autos eventually.
