Two small explosions rock Istanbul (again)

Two small bombs exploded in Turkey's biggest city Istanbul on Monday, but there were no reports of injuries, the Anatolia news agency said.

The first bomb, placed inside a garbage can, exploded in a park in the Besiktas district on the European side of the city, the report added.

The second explosion occurred in a public square in front of the historical Sultanahmet Mosque, an area frequently visited by tourists which is also in the European quarter.

The bombs were designed to cause little damage and maximum noise, the agency said. There was no immediate police statement on who could be responsible for the blasts.

Great. My teenager leaves for Istanbul in about a month.

Maybe they will have used up all their bombs by then...

Excellent place to visit. Friendly, laid-back town, subtly non-European. Going to be a tourist or a student?

He's going on an archaelogical tour for a couple of weeks. I think he'll only be in Istanbul arriving and departing.

I've never been to the country, but I'd like to go, especially since our relations with that country are getting stronger all the time.

He's going to those ancient sites in Turkey that were part of the Seven Churches mentioned in the biblical book of Revelation. The only one I can ever remember is Laodiceia (sp).

Aaah, those were the days.. Hope he or she ain't a cocky American tourist. My boys (9 and 12)will be there then too. They were there during the earthquake. That city will put hair on your chest.

Nah, he's pretty sweet and well-behaved. We took him to Italy and Greece last summer, and he loved it. He's not going to cause any trouble.

I only have a parent's concern that trouble might find him. I guess it's the residual effects of seeing Midnight Express about Turkish prison conditions.

Don't worry about it. My parents thought that I'd end up getting mugged in NYC, but that never materialized either. I went to meet with Jimmy Jones instead...
