Mistakes were made.
Since when do parents trust their home to a teen? And where were the neighbors? I heard on TV that Dean Martin ended his kids' party by going upstairs at 10 PM and phoning in a complaint to the police. "Those Martin kids are having a noisy party." That ended the party. He slept well.

Since when do parents trust their home to a teen? It looks like the parents just let their kid take his own car to their cottage. The Kid was dumb enough to leave the house without locking up or kicking out his friends. I can see it now: Oh please, let us finish up our game then we will leave! You can trust us. We'll remember to lock the door.

When I lived in So. Cal., the police charged the parents for the cost of the police visit, if they were called to their home to end an unsupervised party. If the parents were home, they were charged for serving alcohol to minors.
