Clancy is a wise professional. He understands how business is done. The writer gets $$$ and promo for his book, and that's it.
Hollywood didn't need Clancy (or any other novelist) to create a film. They could just as easily write this film from scratch. So if they're willing to toss some money Clancy's way (a high six, or maybe even a low seven digit figure) why not take it?
I would.
sorry, but the "clancy properties" have been long ago bastardized.
I was generally able to disregard the op-center (and other) books done under his name (I can't even name the other series, since I disregard them out-of-hand), but just today at Wal-Mart several original Clancy novels were on the rack with fresh covers (no doubt due to the release of SOAF), and I don't fault anyone for that, but what disturbed me was seeing the cover of "Red Storm Rising" with the subtitle "A Jack Ryan Novel" which anyone who has read "Clancy's" novels knows has NO relationship to the Ryan series and in fact doesn't even have his character in the book!
Obviously the Clancy properties have been abducted.
