Connecticut Freepers - where to live in Hartford? (VANITY)

Fellow Connecticut Freepers: I will likely be attending law school in Hartford at the University of Connecticut this fall. I will be looking for an apartment to rent in Hartford. I know nothing about the city, and have not even visited the school yet, so I'm not sure where in Hartford to start looking for a place. I would appreciate any thoughts on places to live in Hartford. Walking distance to UConn would be nice but is not necessary. Ideally, I'd like to live somewhere that is walking distance to restaurants, coffee shops, book stores, etc., has many younger professionals and singles (Upper West Side of Manhattan or South End of Boston come to mind for other cities I've lived in) and is relatively safe, but I am open to all suggestions and not sure what Hartford has to offer. I tend to prefer the conveniences of larger apartment complexes to more spacious or charming townhouse/brownstone type places.
Thanks for any and all info. Regards, ET.

*****IMPORTANT NOTE****
Being a like minded freeper, you will probably be joining the Federalist Society....DO NOT I repeat DO NOT include that information on any application for any apartment you may be interested in...You are now moving to a Communist State...subversive ideas and attitudes are NOT accepted!
Play nice with the comrades and your three years will pass by just fine!

Whoa, the CT Freepers are out in Force ! Great feedback of course .... gonna add my two cents worth. E-T, folks are dealing you the straight poop on Hartford (N/g), and even parts of W-Hftd that abutt Hftd proper. And neighborhoods change quality faster than our taxes, and in CT thats fast ! Definity, keep a car handy or get on the bus line from Canton, Avon,Granby, or Torrington, Burville ...grab a map, find Rt44 follow it west ..the safest direction. Or look at Rt 91 NORTH ....not South ....once you get above Bloomfield on Rt91 there are more options for safe housing. I prefer the Rt44 option as you wouldn't have to cross thru Hftd each day to reach School in W-Hftd. Near-lastly, as someone suggested, when you get a few choices, let us Ct.Freepers rate them for you. Lastly, keep conservative opinions to yourself until you gage the company you are in ...too many leftists in Ct. hence the high crime areas in our cities, extreeme welfare, and outrageous unemployment. Wedged between Boston and Albany makes for "living on the edge" when you're a Conservative Ct.Yankee. Good luck

Hartford has a couple of decent clubs and a Symphony of sorts. The rest is a huge garbage heap. The Jesse Jackson wannabees who run the local government and the no-gentrification-allowed natives (especially on the northside of the city) are to blame.
The rural towns have much more going for them. Stay West of the river and north of 84 (Avon, Canton, Windsor, Burlington, Collinsville) area if you wish to find happiness in this life. If you don't mind a 40 minute commute, you can rent a beautiful victorian all to yourself for less than a grand per month in the "stuck in the 50's" town of Winsted.

It has been over three decades since I worked in Hartford, but even then I rented a cottage on the lake in Marlboro, about forty minutes east. It was pretty quiet then although I suspect it has since become built up.

Okay the UConn Law Center is almost on the West Hartford border and some of the areas between asylum Street and West Hartford are actually very nice. Do not consider the North End as it is a high crime district. There are some reasonably priced places on Farmington Ave. heading towards West Hartford. A whole lot depends on if you have an automobile or not as that makes some places suburban locations resonable choices.

I came late, but i will join in on what everyone else has already said.
DO NOT LIVE IN HARTFORD!!!!
Definitly live in one of the suburbs. There isnt alot of traffic in the hartord area compared to other cities so commuting shouldn't be a problem.
I live in Rocky Hill about ten minutes south of hartford. The city is a dump. There are no restauraunts or cafes or shops or anything like that. Its basically all chop-shops, baby clothing stores, and bootleg shops. There are few decent nightclubs and bars during the afterhours, but nothing during the day.
Oh and whatever you do, avoid the North End at nighttime at all costs!! I ventured in their one time and a guy tried to sell me an ak47, no joke!

Oh yeah, if you dont have a car, get one. Nothing is in walking distance in hartford. And the public transportion is a joke.
I might be going to UCONN next year as well, im still waiting for my acceptance, but if not im going to CCSU.

"stuck in the 50's" town of Winsted." Home town of the ever popular, round these parts anyway, Mrs. Naders little boy Ralphy.

Are you commuting or are you going to live near campus? I spent 7 years between both schools (Storrs and CCSU) due to, shall we say chemical influence on my academics, and know the surrounding areas fairly well so if you have any questions regarding off-campus housing let me know.
