Danielle van Dam — Victim of "Alternative Lifestyles?"

MAYBE, JUST MAYBE it was a total stranger who abducted seven-year-old Danielle van Dam from her San Diego home almost two weeks ago. Some thug could have picked her parents’ house at random and snuck in during the middle of the night, evading detection despite the home-security system. Somehow, the intruder could have found his way up to Danielle’s bedroom and removed her against her will—again, without being noticed.

Then again, maybe not.

The practical realities and crime statistics—less than 1 percent of the 800,000 children reported missing in the U.S. last year were abducted by someone unconnected to the family—suggest otherwise. Yet to judge by the initial coverage of Danielle’s disappearance on national TV, one would think her kidnapping had to be the exception to the rule.

The story, as first told on The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Early Show, Larry King Live, and America's Most Wanted, mirrored the account of Danielle’s parents, Brenda and Damon: Brenda was out partying that Friday night with friends at a San Diego nightspot. Damon put the kids to bed around 10. Brenda and her pals showed up around 2:30 and joined Damon for some pizza. The friends then left, and Brenda and Damon went to bed without first checking in on their daughter. They didn’t discover that she was missing until 9 a.m. Saturday morning.

As usual, the story behind the story has been available mostly outside the establishment media—on the Internet and talk radio.

Last Friday, San Diego talk-show host Rick Roberts presented his listeners with an alternative scenario for what might have happened. According to his "reliable" source "high in law enforcement," the van Dams are "swingers," and not in the dancing sense. They engage in "lots of wife-swapping," and reportedly did so in their garage the night Danielle disappeared. According to rumors circulating like mad on local talk shows and Internet bulletin boards, the van Dams lock their garage from the inside during their swingers’ parties to make sure Danielle and her two brothers don’t stumble in on the festivities.

That would explain why the van Dams might have failed to notice an intruder breaking into their home and walking off with their child. It also provides a motive for neighbor David Westerfield, the only suspect thus far identified by San Diego police. According to the rumors—which are, it should be noted, only that—Westerfield was a frustrated, would-be swinger who wanted to attend the van Dams’ soirees, but was denied admission for lack of a partner.

There’s more to the Westerfield angle: He saw Mrs. van Dam at the bar earlier in the evening, where, he claims, they danced (which she denies). He also high-tailed it out of San Diego and into the desert the next morning, which was enough to make police suspicious. So far, they have searched his home, where they found child pornography, and seized two of his vehicles, but they haven’t sought his arrest.

It’s easy to speculate by connecting the dots: At the nightclub, Westerfield might have learned about the orgy planned later in the evening. Mindful that Danielle’s parents would be distracted, he could have used the opportunity to sneak into their home and take her, thereby satisfying his perverted sexual appetites and exacting revenge against the van Dams for not including him in theirs.

It’s just a theory, and it’s rooted purely in conjecture, but it’s also the best lead available so far, which raises a worthwhile question: Why have so many in the press, the national TV media in particular, been reluctant to pursue it?

Surely it’s not just that the stories are unsubstantiated. That, after all, never kept the media from investigating claims of Nicole Brown Simpson’s drug use, the basis of O.J. defenders’ absurd charge that drug lords were "the real killer."

For their part, the van Dams have yet to deny the innuendos categorically. Asked about the alleged swinging on a San Diego TV station, Mrs. van Dam replied that "rumors are rumors," and "they have absolutely nothing to do with this investigation." Newsweek, one of few national media outlets that’s questioned the van Dams’ telling of events, quotes their spokeswoman, Sara Fraunces, as issuing the classic non-denial denial: The van Dams "do not lead a perfect lifestyle," she said, but that’s immaterial to the matter at hand.

Fraunces no doubt chose her words carefully. In the last 35 years, the term "lifestyle" has become not only the code word for any sort of sexual deviance, but also the quick way to claim a certain immunity from inconvenient questioning about it. This is the same logic Bill Clinton and his defenders used to rationalize perjury and lying to the American public, because it was "just about sex." For Gary Condit, it justified denying his affair to Washington police. His lifestyle took precedence over their duty to find Chandra Levy, dead or alive.

Like the "right to privacy" (a term invoked almost exclusively in sexual matters), the "lifestyle" claim is an appeal to the sexual revolution and its promise of an uninhibited sex life free of all responsibilities and moral judgment. It supersedes even laws, justice, or, in the case of Danielle van Dam and others, human life. To many of the reporters covering the van Dam story, the couple’s right to privacy similarly transcends the need for a complete and thorough investigation of their daughter’s disappearance.

But the couple’s "personal life" is a legitimate subject of inquiry, and not just for investigators. With their appeals to the press and calls for volunteers to help look for Danielle, the van Dams have made the investigation into their daughter’s kidnapping a very public affair. Privacy concerns should keep neither police nor reporters from pursuing all viable leads—certainly not when there’s a chance Danielle may still be alive.

It may be, as Mrs. van Dam claims, that Danielle’s abduction has nothing to do with her parents’ sexual predilections, but at this point, there’s no way for the van Dams to know that for sure. If they are lying about that Friday night’s events, then their credibility on all matters must be called into doubt. And even if they are telling the truth about that night, but they hosted sex parties in their home on others, that could yield a long list of potential suspects—people with unhealthy sexual behaviors who know the lay of the house.

The fetishization of "privacy" shouldn’t keep the van Dams from being forthright, or preclude the press from doing its job. The life of a little girl is at stake.

Trial ordered in Danielle van Dam case

     SAN DIEGO, March 14 (UPI) -- After gut-wrenching emotional testimony from the parents of Danielle van Dam, a San Diego County judge late Thursday ordered David Westerfield, the suspect in the 7-year-old girl's disappearance and death, to stand trial on kidnapping and murder charges that carry a potential death sentence.
     Superior Court Judge H. Ronald Domnitz scheduled a March 28 arraignment for Westerfield, 50, a neighbor of the little girl who vanished from her bedroom on the night of Feb. 1-2 and was found dead along a country road nearly a month later following an intensive search.
     Danielle's mother testified earlier in Thursday's preliminary hearing that she saw Westerfield at a neighborhood nightclub on the night her daughter was kidnapped, however she described the suspect in the case as a largely peripheral figure in the festivities who was not invited back to the Van Dam home.
     Brenda van Dam testified, sometimes tearfully, sometimes defiant, at Westerfield's preliminary hearing that she and two girlfriends drank, danced with men and with one another and shot pool with different men at the bar that Friday night. But she said their socializing with the twice-divorced Westerfield was limited and he was not invited to continue the socializing at the Van Dam home when the bar closed at 2 a.m.
     "We let him buy us drinks," Mrs. Van Dam said during her three hours on the stand, but said she did not know the exact number of drinks he had purchased for her and her friends because there was "cash on the bar."
     There was some conflicting information back and forth between defense attorney Steven Feldman and Mrs. Van Dam over an alleged conversation between her and Westerfield.
     On the stand she denied an exchange with him but memorialized interviews with other witnesses were read to her and she was forced to admit that Westerfield had invited her to his home for an "adult" type party. She admitted to giving Westerfield their home phone number. Mrs. Van Dam said that she called her husband from the bar and informed him that they were not "the only ones" who had such affairs.
     Domnitz appeared eager to protect Mrs. Van Dam from the sometimes aggressive questioning by Feldman. He sustained dozens of objections by the prosecution when Feldman made forays into the shadowy and suggestive sexual side of Mrs. Van Dam. He also refused to allow her to answer questions pertaining to the marital status of the Van Dams, calling their talk of divorce a year ago "off limits."
     Westerfield allegedly slipped into the Van Dam home on the night of Feb. 1 and carried off 7-year-old Danielle. Her decomposing body was found at the end of the month along a rural road about 25 miles from the family's home in the San Diego subdivision of Sabre Springs.
     The interaction between Westerfield and Mrs. Van Dam has been considered an important element in the case because it would indicate whether Westerfield had been invited to the home where he would have had access to Danielle's bedroom.
     Mrs. Van Dam testified that she and her husband, Damon, knew Westerfield only slightly even though he lived two doors away, but Westerfield appeared anxious to socialize with her and her two female friends at the bar.
     The women, however, preferred to talk and play pool among themselves and with two other male patrons who were invited back to the residence where Damon van Dam was watching Danielle and her two brothers.
     "I did not dance with David Westerfield," she said.
     Mrs. Van Dam said she had several mixed drinks and a shot of tequila while at the bar and had also shared a marijuana cigarette with her friends at her home and later outside the bar. She denied being a regular drug user, but admitted to smoking marijuana around 30 times in her life. She nevertheless described herself as being clear headed and able to drive home safely.
     After a late-night snack of leftover pizza, the Van Dam's guests departed. Damon van Dam testified late Thursday that he got up to let the pet dog out before dawn and found a sliding door ajar, which he assumed had been left open by one of the guests who had been smoking. His wife had earlier described a situation where she had found the door left ajar.
     Feldman prodded Damon Van Dam on the time that the dog was let out after he said he didn't recall the exact time even though he had told police it was around 3:30 a.m.
     The next morning, Mrs. Van Dam said she went to wake her daughter for a breakfast of eggs she was cooking and found her bedroom empty. She and her husband and two sons frantically searched the house and yard and then called 911.
     A police officer arrived, walked through the house and called in reinforcements.
     "Before I knew it, it was total chaos," Mrs. Van Dam testified. "There were a lot of people on streets and neighbors came over and started searching for Danielle."

I hope Westerfield likes needles. If he were a minority he might have a chance, but I'm afraid he's going down. I don't think the Van Damm's lifestyle will factor too much (this is California) except after the trial when the DA charges them with "child endangerment" - provided he thinks there is enough support for the charge. Pfingst is running for re-election after all.

           Danielle van Dam disappeared from her home in San Diego, California sometime in between 10:30 PM and 9:00 AM of the evening of February 1st and February 2nd, 2002. Her remains were recovered 26 days later from behind oaks trees 25 miles east from her home on February 27th. 

                    The Chart to Map Technique  

              The records state she was put to bed sometime after 10:00 PM on 2/01 and was found missing at 9:00 AM the next morning on 2/02. The astronomical chart-to-map technique that I apply in cases of missing children to reveal their possible locations can only be trusted when an exact time of disappearance is known.  

However, now that she has been found, I attempt to use a map that reveals the position of her home and the location for her remains to verify a time when the planets position in the heavens were aligning into that direction. In addition it It appears that the Moon was forming most of the aspects that night having the most power in her opposition to Mars. So I used this planetary configuration in my search.

 Secondly, I searched for a time when there would be a sign rising at the east point that would be forming a detrimental aspect to a natal planet in the chart of Danielle that would suggestive of harm. I saw three

• The 1st being 1:25 AM

• The 2nd being 2:35 AM

• The 3rd being 5:25 AM

At 1:25 AM when the sign of Scorpio was rising at the ascendant at 25 degrees, which would connect to Danielle's Pluto position at birth the Moon/Mars connections aligns into the area of El Cajon where she was uncovered.  The Moon in the chart above is located in between  10 and 11 O'clock and Mars directly opposite is located in between 4 and 5 o'clock. If you can visualize this charts' center point positioned over her home, the Moon/Mars alignment heads out to El Cajon.

The chart I erected for 2:25 AM had Sagittarius rising and forming an critical aspect to her natal Saturn, the planet of restriction.  Mars' South by East position in this chart when placed over her residence heads out to the west of El Cajon.  (In this case, before Danielle was found, I believed that her time of abduction would have been closer to 2:35 AM due to Sagittarius rising at 8 degrees which would have squared her natal Saturn position.)

           Special Note on Longitude: The numbers above are the measurement of the planets at the time of her birth and disappearance. I have already noted, that  Saturn was 7 degrees Pisces when Danielle was born. She was 7 years old when she was abducted.              I derived a list of all the words (363) that can be formed using only the letters that comprise her name, DANIELLE VAN DAM. The words from her name will always be depicting throughout the rest of this writing in BOLD CAP LETTERS.        

          I have found that this technique works best when much is known about the victims’ life, so that words can be eliminated as having already occurred. I will use her words selectively and form anagrams using them to suggest details of her whereabouts and her abductors. This technique can be quite startling in the way that is describes the truth.     

         I found some really disturbing anagrams that suggest to me that this case is not your normal abduction in which the child is strictly used for sexual gratification and than dumped.  I believe from what her name tells me that this child was part of a deal and may have been supposed to have been transported more than once; but that it might not have happened, something didn't go as planned.

              I looked for words from my list that suggested something of danger to this young girl.  I found the words DAVID, ALIVE, INVADED, DEAL, EVIL, VANDAL, ANAL, DEAD, LIED, NEVADA, LAND, MILE, NINE, and DEADLINE.

             Using the name DAVID in a anagram I found NAME DAVID ELL N.  What I believe this means is that perhaps someone named David, who lived North (N) from her at a 45 degree angle is responsible for her abduction.    When I used the word INVADED in an anagram of her name, I got  INVADED ME AN ALL; but more troubling were the words A ELL MAN INVADED.  The word ELL is for a right angle. Did her neighbor live at a right angle to her?

              One of the words that is brothering me terribly is the word ALIVE.  Using it in an anagram I got ALIVE, MEN AD LAND and ME ALIVE DAN LAND.  Was she being held somewhere on someone’s land, who maybe named DAN? Or, maybe the name of the property sounds something like this, DAN? 

               Using the word VANDAL I got several suggestive anagrams. Perhaps a clue awaits in one of them.  NAME IDLE VANDAL and VANDAL DEAL IN ME . AMEN! VANDAL LIED... VANDAL MADELINE and VANDAL ‘N’ E-MAILED.  Email?  Is there a clue in someone's computer files?

             This word EVIL also present in her name tells of some wrongful doing. Using it I got EVIL MEN AND A LAD and ME AND AN EVIL LAD.  I thought more about who this lad could be.  So I used the word to form other anagrams with it.  Disturbingly, I got an anagram that actually uses the name Dave in association with this LAD in DAVE LAD LINEMAN. A lineman is... A person employed to install or repair telephone, telegraph, or electric power lines. Also called linesman. 2. A man employed to inspect and repair railroad tracks. 3. Football. A player positioned on the forward line.  I wonder if Westerfield has any connections that can link him or someone else to this field.

              The two words EVIL and DEAL are quite disturbing. MAD ‘n’ AN EVIL DEAL . Is someone pissed things didn’t go well? EVIL MEN AD ANAL. Could this be a Child Porn Ring? L MADE DEAL IN VAN.  The letter L could be for Lad. Or, could L the first letter of someone’s name?

            NEVADA LAND MILE ... LAD L(eave) ME IN NEVADA. 

         This anagrams LEAVE INLAND MAD suggests that someone didn’t get what they wanted out of this.    D LEAVE MAINLAND . Dave left the mainland?  

         Why should there be these anagrams in the name of murdered seven year old? A NV MAL DEADLINE.  I AM DEAD L NV LANE. MADE N LAND ALIVE.  ED, MALE LAND IN VAN and ED, A MALE LAD IN NV.  

         I was very surprised to see Danielle turn up in the direction of the Mars position.   The Moon had the most power with its elevation.  It was 15 degrees and Rt. 15 heads into Nevada, one of the words that can be born of her name. Was Westerfield suppose to meet someone to hand over Danielle.  Was this meeting suppose to take place in a Mall.  Did he miss the deadline, now he is in possession of little girl.  

DAVID WESTERFIELD 

        In his name, DAVID WESTERFIELD, I found the word DELIVERS and DESERT.  There is also the words SILVER and LEAF.  NEVADA is known as the SILVER state and its tree is the Single LEAF Pinon. 

Could David Westerfield have supposed to pass along Danielle to this LAD who would finish transporting her to NEVADA by the way of this Route #15. 

         When I found the word NINE in her name I thought perhaps it could offer something in regards to miles in distance, but what I found was a bit more disturbing.  Using the word I got NINE DEAD AV MALL.  AV is the abbreviation for au·di·o·vis·u·al which relates to both audible and visible materials, such as films and tape recordings, that present information in audible and pictorial form. The word MALL could be a shopping plaza or suggest a MALLing. Will we come to learn that this is the number of how many others have fallen victim to a connection in this crime? This word makes me wonder if a switch was made in a Mall parking lot? 

                 I also found this anagram using the word NINE.  LAD MADE NINE VAL.  Is this his take on the DEAL? Or, is there a Valley where a Route 9 may run?  This next anagram may suggest that someone with the name that begins with the letter N has an involvement with her case.  N NAME VALID LEAD.

Missing Children Homicide Report

No matter how alarming or disturbing, accurate information is one the best weapons we have to prevent and protect our children from becoming victims of violent crime.

The kidnapping and murder of a child is a parent's greatest nightmare. Statistically these crimes are less than one-half of one percent of all child murders, but their infrequency, coupled with the fact they are complex, emotion-laden, and high profile, makes them extremely difficult to investigate and solve.

This study, by the Washington State Attorney General's Office, could lead to major improvements in the efficiency and effectiveness of how these crimes are investigated and solved nationwide. The study will be used to train police and detectives to make better decisions in responding to reports of missing children, prioritizing their actions and resources, asking the right questions, knowing what to look for and where to look first.

Summary of Findings

In 53 percent of cases the victim and abductor were strangers. This relationship, where the murderer is a stranger to the victim, "defines" this particular type of murder. The data also suggest there may be a greater predisposition to serial offending among child abduction killers.

The typical victims were white females, about 11 years old, often described as a "normal kids" from middle class neighborhoods with stable family relationships.

Nine percent of the victims were five years of age or younger.

In 58 percent of the cases, the initial contact site between victim and abductor was within a quarter mile of the victim's home. In 33 percent of the cases, first contact was less than 200 feet from the victim's home.

The typical abductors were white males, about 27 years old, unmarried, with prior arrests for violence in 60 percent of the cases, and, in 53 percent of the cases, with prior crimes against children.

Contrary to popular belief, child abduction killers are not truly "loners." Only 17 percent lived alone, while 83 percent lived with someone else and 34 percent lived with their parents.

The primary motivation for these murders was sexual assault. Sixty percent of the killers had prior arrests for violent crimes. The majority, 53 percent, had committed prior crimes against children, the most common being sexual assaults.

Fifty-seven percent were simply "victims of opportunity." The most common basic elements in these crimes are: a motivated offender, the opportunity to commit the crime, and ineffective guardians.

In almost two-thirds of the cases the abductions were "snatch and grab" confrontations where the predators saw an available victim then quickly assaulted and subdued them.

Timing in reporting a missing child is critical. It should be done immediately. In 60 percent of the cases there were delays of over two hours between the time the victim was known to be missing and a report was made to law enforcement authorities. In 74 percent of the cases the victims were dead within three hours after abduction.

Police response upon receiving such a report should also be immediate. Police need to concentrate as many investigative resources as quickly as possible on these cases. This may enhance the odds that a child is recovered alive and will certainly improve the probability that the predator is caught.

Since the victims' last known locations were usually very close to the site of initial contact with their abductors, the need for a neighborhood canvass may be among the biggest issues uncovered in this research. When police did not know the initial contact site, the solvability rate dropped 40 percent below average. When the initial contact site was known, the solvability rate increased 13 percent above average.

The neighborhood canvas should not only ask the question, "What did you see that was unusual?", but should also ask, "What did you see that was usual?" In the cases examined by this study, the killer was in the area of initial contact two-thirds of the time because he belonged there. He lived in the area 29 percent of the time; 19 percent were there for some normal social activity, and 18 percent either worked in the area or were there on other business.

After the crime, key behaviors by the killer are most common and most telling. Twenty-one percent left town, 18 percent confided in someone about their involvement, and 10 percent actually interjected themselves into the murder investigation in some way.

State Attorney General releases Child Homicide Study-Summary

 May 13, 1997 - Olympia State Attorney General Christine Gregoire today released a first-of-its-kind research study that could significantly improve the efficiency and effectiveness of how law enforcement agencies investigate and solve child abduction murder cases. The study also gives parents and other child guardians valuable information to better protect children from becoming victims of these violent crimes.

 "Although some of the study findings may be alarming, the more we know about the nature of these crimes, the more effective we will be at preventing, investigating and solving them," said Gregoire. "The study uncovers some striking patterns that shatter commonly-held beliefs which, in the past, have worked against police, parents and the victims."

 For example, in 60 percent of the cases, there were delays of more than two hours between the time the victims were known to be missing and the police were notified. In 74 percent of the cases, the victims were dead within three hours after abduction.

 "Timing in reporting a missing child and the police response to those reports is absolutely critical," said Gregoire. "Quick action on both counts may save a child's life and will certainly improve the probability of apprehending the kidnapper."

 There are an average of 100 of child abduction-murder cases in the United States each year. The study examined more than 600 child abduction-murder cases from 44 states.

 Other key findings of the study include:

 The three-year project was conducted by the AG's Criminal and Justice Division including Chief Criminal Investigator Robert Keppel, project director; Violent Crime Investigations Supervisor Ken Hanfland, project coordinator; and University of Washington Sociology Professor Dr. Joseph G. Weis, research manager.

 The AG's Office was asked to conduct the study by the U.S. Justice Department's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. "We are proud to have worked with the Washington State Attorney General's office to gain a better understanding of how and when child homicides are committed and who commits these crimes," said OJJDP Administrator Shay Blichik. "It is my hope that by sharing these findings with law enforcement at the federal, state and local level, we will help save children's lives."

 The study request and $500,000 OJJDP grant was inspired by a Washington Homicide Investigation Tracking System presentation which Keppel made at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. HITS is a statewide, computerized information system designed to collect, collate and analyze data from murders and predatory sexual offenses. It was decided the same data collection concept would be extremely useful to local law enforcement nationwide in helping to solve cases of abducted and murdered children.

 The study will be used to train police and detectives throughout Washington and the nation. "This gives detectives a more accurate picture and sense of how often or how rarely a characteristic or circumstance can be expected in these types of cases," said Keppel. "It will help them make better, quicker decisions in responding to reports of missing children and in prioritizing their investigative actions and resources."

 The Justice Department is talking to the AG's Office about providing additional money to continue the research. "We only looked at a snapshot of time and the advantage of continuing this research is that we may discover other important consistencies or changes that will keep giving police and parents the upper hand in investigating and preventing these crimes," said Gregoire.

Danielle Van Dam was first discovered missing from her home Saturday morning, 1-FEB-2002. Her father had put her to bed sometime after 10 p.m. Friday, as her mother celebrated a co-worker's going-away party at a nearby Poway nightspot

Initially police reported that Mr. Van Dam told investigators he woke up around 1:30 a.m. Saturday to let out the family dog and noticed a burglar alarm light was blinking. He discovered a sliding glass door was open and he closed it

Mrs. Van Dam arrived home around 2:30 a.m. and stayed up for another hour with her husband and friends.  She went to bed without looking in on their daughter, despite finding a side door into the yard ajar.

David Westerfield, a neighbor, has been arrested for the Kidnapping.
