European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Javier Solana pledged Thursday further EU political and economic support for the Palestinian people and assistance to rebuild and reorganize their institutions.
Solana issued the announcement following a meeting in Cairo with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak at the beginning of a regional tour expected to take him to a number of countries, including Israel and Palestine.
He conveyed that the main goal of the visit was to consult with leaders in the region and explore how the EU could assist in ending the continuous violence and get the sides to resume the stalled Middle East peace process, according to the Saudi Press Agency SPA.
The EU, said Solana, was also prepared to help in the reconstruction of Palestinian infrastructure and institutions, and hopefully, "get a new process starting that may lead to something which is different from the situation today".
Furthermore, he added the EU was also prepared to work around the clock in order to get a political process going, however pointed out that the E.U. would not try to impose its ideas on the Palestinians, SPA said.
Solana stated that he was not carrying any specific proposals to regional leaders on how to proceed, however suggested that it would be necessary to convene a conference on the Middle East at some point.
