Yugoslavia suspends visa requirements for Croatians

Yugoslavia has unilaterally decided to suspend visas for Croatian citizens during the coming months, introducing instead one-month tourist passes to be issued at border crossings, Interior Minister Zoran Zivkovic said.

Zivkovic said he had already instructed border police to issue tourist visas, costing 310 Yugoslav dinars (five euros, 4.5 dollars) starting from June 1.

The measure would be valid until September 30, the Tanjug news agency quoted Zivkovic as saying.

The liberalisation of the visa regime was aimed at boosting ties with the former Yugoslav republics after the conflicts which marred the past decade in the region, Zivkovic said.

He added that he expected Croatia to introduce the same measure for Yugoslav citizens.

Croatia and Yugoslavia, now made up of Serbia and Montenegro, established diplomatic relations after the end of the Serbo-Croatian war in 1995, but Zagreb and Belgrade have kept a complicated and strict visa regime ever since.

However, Montenegro unilaterally introduced tourist visas enabling Croatian citizens to enter the republic in 1998.

Along with Croatia, Slovenia is the only former Yugoslav country that has a visa regime with Yugoslavia, while citizens of Bosnia and Macedonia can enter the country as tourists without limits.
