Woman sentenced to 15 years for killing husband 4 days after wedding
By Rana Husseini
AMMAN A 22-year-old Ramtha woman was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Sunday on conviction of killing her husband four days after their wedding in Oct. 2001.
The tribunal reduced the premeditated murder charge against Thraa Abdullah to manslaughter and handed her the maximum penalty for strangling her husband, Ahmad Hussein, with an electric cord in their house in Ramtha on Oct. 15 last year.
The defendant's family had forced her to marry the victim, and the marriage took place on Oct. 12, the court said. However, the defendant did not allow her husband to engage in sexual intercourse with her, the court added.
The families of the couple interfered in the couple's personal business, the court added.
For four days after the wedding night, her relatives and in-laws were constantly asking her if the marriage had been consumated. Then they started urging her verbally to have sex with him, the court said.
On the day of the murder, the court said, the couple quarreled about the matter when Hussein felt that his wife was avoiding him on purpose, and demanded to have sex with her.
The woman became enraged and pushed her husband. He fell on the edge of the couple's bed and became semi-unconscious, the court said.
The wife grabbed an electric cord, wrapped it around her husband's neck and squeezed tightly until he died, the court added.
The defendant then ran to the kitchen to get a kitchen knife to commit suicide, but she was interrupted by her mother-in-law who knocked at the couple's door to see if the two did finally sleep together, the court said.
The defendant told interrogators that her father threatened her on several occasions, once with a gun, to accept Hussein as her husband and she had no choice but to marry him.
He threatened me again when he learnt that I did not sleep with my husband, the court quoted her as telling interrogators.
Sunday's verdict, handed down by justices Ahmad Khatib, Omar Khleifat and Nayef Samarat, will automatically be reviewed by the Court of Cassation within 30 days.

I must be missing something here. If my wife refused to consummate the marriage, I think her family would be the last people I would talk to about it.

Strangled him huh? Seems that they had profoundly different ideas on what constituted "necking."

There's something missing here. How old was Ahmad? She pushed him down and almost knocked him out. Took the electrical cord to finish the job, heh. If Ahmad was 60 maybe he had no teeth. Could be kind of a turn-off.

Well that was a short honeymoon . . .

If Ahmad was 60 maybe he had no teeth. Could be kind of a turn-off. Then again, she probably had a mustache.
