I didn't find any thread about the latest Irish elections.
TOPICS: Foreign Affairs
KEYWORDS: elections; fiannafail; fiannagael; ireland; sinnfein
I saw Bertie Ahern from a restaurant window. I was not alert enough to get my picture taken with him though. It's the closest I've been to a head-of-state (about 30 metres.)
I still haven't figured out the Irish instant runoff system yet. Anyway, the guys who lowered taxes and are building roads seem to be back in. Sinn Fein gained 4 seats.

More interesting than contemplating Bill Richardson as our next gov.

I can't think of anything that Mr Richardson has done for NM. He was my Congressman for some years and I never got anything but surly responses from "his people" on any issue. However, NM seems to have survived Toney Anaya.

This was important but the news was dominated by a spat between some guy named Roy (or Ray) Keane (or King or Keene) and the coach of the Irish Soccer team. Keane (you can call him Ray) quit (or was fired). Election news rated third (after the news about the English squad having lots of injuries.)

Elections? Football is the important thing! I was browsing Eire's news the other day, and kept seeing articles dealing with "captains" and such, and, being a mere Mississippi boy without adequate international expose, assumed it must be an army captain... The Irish take their football seriously- but then, I gather most of the world is the smae way. Only other nations' football teams don't provide the interesting "human interest" quite like the Irish. I'm sure the rumors of excessive drinking on the part of the Irish boys aren't true though...
